Beautyland Hotel II
Excellent central location
What we say:
You may have to climb a few stairs, but Beautyland Hotel 2 is a great flashpacker Yangon hotel option, offering a choice of fan or air-con rooms, with excellent service and prices that are competitive for the quality on offer.
Beautyland is a tall building that blends into the others in the home electronics area of downtown. As you walk past all the speaker, appliance and TV shops, you’ll notice the long stretched sign running up the side of the building that can be seen from the main roads that it sits between.
Service, service, service: it’s almost always the first thing people mention about this place. On my visit, though the concierge was on the phone and someone was at the desk, he immediately greeted me, told me he would be right with me and went back to helping the other two people. Within minutes someone was showing me around, all the way to the roof of the building.
Fan rooms are at the very top floor and go for US$25 with natural light pouring in through the windows. The bathroom is shared and the stairs are high but I’ve heard they’ll carry your luggage to your rooms for you. With only five dollars more getting you air-con and a private bathroom, you would think it would be an easy decision, but the fan rooms seemed to be the more pleasant of the choices, being open and welcoming and providing a happy dose of Vitiman D from the sunshine, which is lacking in the other rooms that have no windows and even seem a bit damp.
Room rates seem to vary, but I was told that a single air-con room goes for US$30 and a double goes for US$40. The cleanliness of the place and its bathrooms are not excellent but as you’d expect at this price point in Yangon. In these rooms hot showers are offered along with TV, a safety deposit box, baggage storage and laundry service. Slow WiFi can be used in the lobby and next to the reception, where the restaurant is located and you’ll have your included breakfast.
Located on 33rd Street in between Bo Gyoke and Anawratha Roads, it’s a short walk from Sule Pagoda Road and its bustling bus stops. Within another couple of blocks is Bo Gyoke Market and just north is the train station with its circular tour of town, making it one of the better locations to venture out from or into downtown. Beautyland 2 isn’t the cheapest place you’ll find in Yangon, but the quality is high enough to make it worth shelling out for.
Also, if you head down to the Anawratha end of Street 33, you’ll find a great little street stall selling Khao Swe Thote — fresh, hand-mixed noodles that make for an excellent breakfast and come in at just 300 kyat.
