Bike World Guesthouse
One of the most popular guesthouses in Yangon
What we say:
Offering clean, well-furnished, bicycle-themed rooms with a long list of features at good prices, Bike World is one of the best value guesthouses in Yangon (Rangoon). Bike enthusiasts, look no further!
This guesthouse and travel agency in one plus a bike shop just down the street is owned and run by Jeff and Soe Soe; the location is not in the downtown area where most the sights are, but is instead in a quieter spot just west of Inya Lake.
While their sought after B&B seems to be ever-expanding, at the moment, eight rooms surround a paved courtyard where mountain bikes are stored and stacked on trucks, ready for rental or touring. Rooms come with WiFi, satellite TV, a safe, fridge and furniture. Three rooms are doubles, with a shared bathroom cleanly kept with hot water and Western toilet. Every other room has its own attached bathroom, which rides along (Ed: I see what you did there) with the same cleanliness and amenities.
Rooms fall in the US$50-65 range and unlike other Yangon accommodation spots, they are happy to add roll-in beds and do not charge more for extra people. Higher priced room have more than enough space to fit three beds in comfortably. Breakfast is included; choose from either eggs and toast or a Myanmar breakfast.
The staff are very friendly, and Jeff can usually be found working among them or the mechanics, fixing up bikes; he’s happy to share his knowledge about the area and history. Soe Soe can usually be found around the front desk, speaks English well, and is pleasant to chat with (and book tours through).
Every Friday night at 22:00, a large group of cyclists go for a night ride through Yangon, starting at their bike shop. You can join for free whether or not you’re staying there. Rental prices for the bikes are US$15-$20 a day. Sunday morning at 6:30 they load up the trucks and head out to a national park for a day of dirt trails through gorgeous landscapes. US$10 gets you a ride in the truck with a Burmese breakfast at the small village where the ride starts.
Located next to the Swiss and Israeli embassies, this extremely safe neighbourhood is a on a sidestreet just north of Moon Bakery, on the west side of Inya Lake. A taxi should cost 3,000-5,000 kyat from the airport. If you are flying with your own bike, call ahead and Bike World should be able to organise a shuttle pick-up for you. Downtown Yangon and its history does seem far away, but good restaurants, tea shops, seafood by the lake and Moon Bakery are just a couple of pedals away.
Bike World is one of the most popular guesthouses in Yangon — so do make sure to book ahead.
