Cherry Guest House

Good value and clean

What we say: 4 stars

Though most of its rooms have no hot water and not of a view — or even windows — Cherry Guest House is one of the cleanest budget guesthouses in Yangon (Rangoon) since a fresh renovation and offers good amenities in a professionally run environment.

The triple room view

The triple room view.

Their air-con, bustling lobby is on the fourth floor, but walk up one floor once you enter their building and you’ll find an elevator to spirit you skyward to it — it continues on to Cherry’s rooms on the fifth and seventh floor. In the lobby are neatly placed lounge chairs circling a large screen TV mounted on the wall, with a water dispenser and kettle for guest use on hand.

Free WiFi is rumoured to be fast and readily available here — though we didn’t try it — and there’s a feeling that all your requirements will be taken care of with attention to detail. Staff are friendly and on our visit gave a clear breakdown of room rates and regulations. Reception is open 24 hours and a laundry service is offered but outsourced.

Half way up the building, the green sign marks the way.

The first single room we looked at had a somewhat funny feel, with tiles surrounding the bedroom running half way up the wall, mimicking the bathroom tiles surrounding the toilet. A satellite TV attached to the wall next to the air-con and fan should ease decor concerns though, and a minibar, wooden desk and chair, though crammed into the corner, is a pleasant surprise at this pricepoint. We were told that all rooms are air-con, but not all have hot water. No hot water won’t be much of a problem at all during hot season, but might be a concern for during the cooler season.

Single rooms are US$20 a night, double rooms are US$25 and the triples are US$40 a night. If you’re staying longer than three nights, advanced payment is required. The top floors have been deemed the “best rooms” with hot water, more room space, an occasional balcony, and better views of downtown Yangon. If you’re looking for some of these better rooms, make sure you book ahead as they told us many of them were pre-booked for the next two months.

This is a non-smoking guesthouse, with an additional US$25 cleaning fee if you’re discovered breaking this rule. Breakfast is from 07:00 till 10:00, with the choice of a traditional Burmese or Western breakfast that changes daily.

Cherry’s location is on prime real estate in the midst of the downtown sidestreets, which put you a quick walk to Sule Pagoda and Bogyoke Aung San Market.

Cherry Guest House is an exceptional budget choice for Yangon, given its prices, cleanliness and amenities. We’d say it’s on par with Chan Myaye Guesthouse next door, another one of our top budget hotel recommendations for Yangon — so you can easily see both places before committing to a stay.

Once called a nebula of good energy, Christopher wasn't impressed by where his institutional learning took him and blames travel and wonderfully eccentric people for where he is today: Burma (Myanmar).
