Aung Tha Pyay Hotel

A quieter spot

What we say: 3.5 stars

Aung Tha Pyay Hotel is a midrange hotel located in downtown Yangon (Rangoon) boasting a quiet, quite tasteful atmosphere suited to travellers as well as family and people visiting on business.

Historic breweries make for great hotels

Historic breweries make for good hotels.

Staff told us that the building was once a brewery, which isn’t surprising considering a lingering historical charm. The ground floor lobby and restaurant is well lit with an open and fresh-air atmosphere and staff are very welcoming with smiles and a complimentary drink. This helpful attitude may be much appreciated when they carry your bags up to your room via the stairway, since there is no lift in the three-floor building.

We found the clean rooms more spacious than most other hotels in this area, with complimentary water and toiletries provided. A minibar and satellite TV are set up in each room, with additional furniture beyond beds like closets and chairs. If a kettle is not waiting for you, a staff member will bring it to you upon request. Although not too many rooms offer anything much in the way of views, the air-con keeps you cool with closed windows. The hot water bathrooms have Western toilets.

Clean with complimentries

Clean with extras.

Car parking and laundry services are accessible, you can send faxes and use an international phone, and there’s WiFi in the rooms. Knowledgeable staff can help with bookings and directions. Pay in US dollars or kyat with a conversion rate; we were quoted a rate of US$75 for a standard double; a suite offers more room and the same amenities for US$85 while the family room, which sleeps three in a double/single combo is US$100. Children under five stay for free if using an existing bed otherwise it’s an extra $15 per person.

The Standard Room

A very standard looking standard.

Foreigners and locals work away on the ground floor restaurant using the free WiFi that comes in at a decent speed right alongside people eating — the staff told us they order from the restaurant next door here. In the hotel’s dinner area, they have plugs at each table for people with laptops. Room service can be ordered between 10:00 and 21:00.

Families deserve carpet during their stay

Families deserve carpet during their stay, apparently.

The location of Aung Tha Pyay Hotel, just off Merchant Street and a few buildings north on the small street of 38th, makes walking to sites such as Sule Pagoda and the harbour easy. The price is comparable to other hotels of its stature in Yangon, but worth it for those who need a reliable, quieter place to stay well positioned in the city.

Once called a nebula of good energy, Christopher wasn't impressed by where his institutional learning took him and blames travel and wonderfully eccentric people for where he is today: Burma (Myanmar).
