Outside the Old city walls and set beside a "government house" hidden away in a restricted area, the Bagan Thiripyitsaya Sanctuary Resort has among the most expansive grounds of the riverside properties, but with much of it being a grass lawn running down to the river, it lacks the more "jungled" feel you get at some of the other Old Bagan hotels.
Rooms come in aged duplex cabins in river-view and garden-view configurations -- aside from the aspect the interiors are identical we were told (we only inspected a river view room). There is plenty of space in the room proper, but the bathrooms feel a little cramped -- perhaps they should have skipped the bath. Facilities include flatscreen TV, minibar and air-con but guests are encouraged to use the WiFi in reception or the restaurant as the signal is not strong in the rooms. The resort also has a large swimming pool that sits between the restaurant and the river. This is an attractive resort, but the rooms are well past their prime.
