Our favourite in Nyaung Shwe
La Maison Birmane is a boutique hotel consisting of bungalows of two sizes, with the larger referred to as chalets.
We rate this joint as the best hotel in town: very well designed, cosy and charming. It sits in a very quiet and clean Burmese neighbourhood that consists mostly of large bamboo huts. A small restaurant is at the hotel's entrance and offers traditional Burmese and Thai-influenced Burmese. Rooms surround an organic garden that'll eventually be used to provide fresh veggies to guests. Rooms are spotless, with high pinewood ceilings and large bathrooms with a separate shower area. Beds are very comfy and equipped with mosquito nets and fans -- no air-con as it's not necessary here. The only drawback, which may be seen positively by some, is its location, which is quite far from the majority of the town's restaurants and shops. However, the hotel is just around the corner from the Green Chili, a restaurant specialising in Thai cuisine that fellow travellers loved. If you're a traveller who gets excited about small boutique style hotels then this is your place. Book well in advance during busy season.
