Sokleap Guest House

They outdid themselves

What we say: 4 stars

Sokleap is the only hotel in Kompong Cham to rival Mekong Hotel's value. It'd be the clear winner, if not for its slightly remote location 1km south of the traffic circle, in a large house set behind a metal gate. The French expatriate who opened Sokleap in mid-2008 invested in hard-to-find amenities such as deep bathtubs. Unlike most of the guesthouses and hotels in the area, he didn't scrimp on details. Chandeliers adorn the lobby and a wide polished wooden staircase winds up to the second floor guest rooms, which come with tea sets, dishes, TV and refrigerator. The bedding and curtains are made of soft, sturdy fabric. Some of the rooms have porch balconies, though they overlook a large parking lot. The mansion itself resembles a home of the Cambodian elite. Next door, the Frenchman runs a karaoke bar bearing the same name. The main drawback to Sokleap is its location on a sidestreet in the southernmost part of the city centre, about a 20-minute walk from the main riverside area.
