What we say: 4 stars

Owned by a former French paratrooper named Pierre, Terres Rouges boasts extremely tasteful rooms in a two-storey building, with a new building which looks equally promising in terms of style. Spacious verandas with lounges provide plenty of opportunities for lazing around and enjoying the Birds of Paradise-filled, lovely gardens and the small but lovely pool, built in early 2008, with an adjacent spa complete with a hair salon. The rooms can be a little on the noisy side during the evenings due to open-air ventilation in some sections, so light sleepers should be properly equipped. French doors attached to each room lead out onto a large, wooden share deck. The enormous stone semi-outdoor bathrooms in the six bungalow suis, with rainfall showerheads and giant tubs, transform bathing into an indulgence. Pencil drawings of Khmer scenes adorn the walls of the various rooms. This is the place to splash out on a scrumptious French meal in Rattanakiri, in the open-air restaurant lit by antique lamps. Try the coq a vin for $8.50, although it and several other speciality French dishes must be ordered a day in advance. There's a broad range of speciality cocktails that sounded enticing and breakfast, while not included in the price, is no more than a couple dollars Highly recommended.
