Description
This extraordinarily ugly blight on Banlung is supposed to be popular with the NGO set, which gives you an indication of the few places on offer to stay. Located a few hundred metres from Banlung market behind the post office, it's a convenient location and has decent amenities but it's just so utterly tasteless that you don't want to stay here to encourage this kind of 'development'. Staff are pushy and brash too. The open-air restaurant offers a decent enough menu, with a broad range of western and Asian dishes and of course the ubiquitous fruit shakes. The lake fish with Angkor beer sauce sounds innovative, if a bit frightening. We found the owner Mrs Kim to be less-than-honest in some of the information she supplied.

This review is too harsh. We were picked up at the bus stop and found clean, comfortable accommodation. The location is great - in town, near restaurants but away from the dust (!!!) of the main road. When I left prescription glasses in a vehicle, Mrs Lim happily used her mobile phone to track down the driver.

Yaklom Hill Lodge
10 minute drive (in dry season) east of Banlung past the lake
This peaceful sanctuary is a great choice if you don't mind staying out of town. Although it remains open in the wet season, the road into Ban Lung quickly deteriorates and getting to and from it is a real pain. Otherwise, spacious and charming cottages with comfy beds and hot water bathrooms... more
Lakeside Chheng Lok Hotel
Far side of lake, Ban Lung
The Lakeside Chheng Lok Hotel sits on the far side of the lake and if the far pricier Terres Rouges is out of your budget, this is a good, albeit somewhat charmless second choice. The upstairs lakeside rooms have good views and the restaurant by the lake is very pleasant. Rooms are kitted out and... more
Sovann Kiri Hotel
Road 78, Ban Lung
The Sovann Kiri Hotel is just about the flashest digs in Ban Lung, and while a bit low on charm and ambience, for the money, this represents excellent value. Rooms are spotless and the upstairs rooms have reasonable views over some of the dust-covered surrounds. Rooms in the hotel building have hot... more
Ratanak Hotel
5 minute walk from the market, Ban Lung
This is the most popular budget hotel in Ban Lung, but it is badly in need of a coat of paint, sand-blasting, or perhaps demolition. Owner and general Ban Lung fixer, Mr Leng insists he is going to renovate the hotel shortly... but that story has been going around for a looong time now. Rooms,... more
