Goldiana Hotel
Aid worker favourite

What we say:
The long-running midrange Goldiana is a favourite among the aid crowd -- who get a 20% discount -- and was also very popular with Westerners adopting Khmer children until adoptions were banned. The facade outside is a garish imitation of Khmer architecture while the inside is begging for refurbishment. The 148 rooms are comfortable if a little drab and the same goes for the Gold Restaurant, which serves simple decent food but lacks any semblance of warmth, with its fluorescent lighting and hard wooden chairs. The hotel's main selling point is its pool, which is a great asset in hot season, though it can get crowded in the afternoon with kids swimming and 20-somethings relaxing by the outdoor bar. Internet in the room costs $5 per day. The tuk tuk drivers and motodops out front can be painful. Though it's a popular choice, the deluxe rooms at the Golden Gate are far better value. For the price, there are hotels with much more character in the area, such as Villa Langka around the corner which also has a pool, as well as more trees and pleasant rooms.

Ugly but profesional
I have stayed at this mid range hotel several times. Its location is useful and for me having a guarded car park is and a decent pool a big plus. The building is hideously ugly and the interior carries on the tasteless theme to the point where I can say the place is so ugly it is almost beautiful! Not be put off by the appearances as the staff are helpful the booking service professional. Rooms are spacious; however most of the standard rooms do not have any kind of window but the décor is quite nice so one could not notice. I prefer the deluxe rooms which are big, light airy and clean. Bathrooms are little old fashioned but OK. The big deep pool on the roof is nice to cool off in. (its not shallow enough for children with no supervision; so familles bear this in mind) When I last stayed here it was Khmer New Year; which meant that service was not so slick. That happens almost everywhere in Cambodia at this time. Food in the restaurant was quite nice; but its not so atmospheric if there are no other guests there. Asian breakfasts are good; but the American breakfast is disappointing. I’d go round the corner to one of the many restaurants there for a better western breakfast.
