Description
The Renakse Hotel sits opposite the Royal Palace and from the street looks like a very promising option. We've been watching as this place has been ever so slowly renovated over the past five years. The potential is definitely there, with its colonial feel and pleasant gardens. They've managed to get 22 rooms up to scratch but it's been a long and bumpy road to achieve reliable plumbing and a competent staff. This easily qualifies as Phnom Penh's very own Faulty Towers. But things are getting better -- the rooms we saw on our last visit were exquisitely well-decorated in a minimalist, Khmer-inspired designed. We're big fans of the day-beds near the windows on raised wooden platforms, and the colourful, tasteful decor and great bedding. All rooms have air-con and cable TV, along with tiled bathrooms with hot-water. It's certainly one of the most blissfully quiet hotels in Phnom Penh, so it might just be turning into a nice little getaway spot. If only they'd get around to fixing up the peeling paint and broken pavers that mar the look of the exterior. Maybe someday.

The travelfish description of the Renakse is totally accurate! Checked in for a ''luxury'' last few nights in Phnom Penh. Room looked excellent. Then we found the cockroach in the shower, the missing shower head on the bottom of the bath, the tv didn't work and we couldn't unpack because the light that illuminated an otherwise dark wardrobe didn't work. One poor receptionist to deal with it and no repair man or manager immediately available. All this for 60US a night! We checked out and revisited the excellent and much cheaper River Star Hotel.

Hope & Anchor
213 Sisowath Quay
The Hope & Anchor (previously known as Mikey's) is toward the northern end of Sisowath Quay, atop the same-named popular bar and restaurant. Rooms are clean and well maintained, though the riverview rooms felt a bit empty as they're big but don't have much furniture -- all have TV, bar fridge and... more

The Pavilion
227 Street 19, Phnom Penh
The Pavilion, housed in a colonial residence walking distance from both Sihanouk Boulevard and the Grand Palace will appeal to anyone looking to stay in a charming monument to Cambodia's colonial period. Star-Royal Hotel
383 Sisowath Quay, Phnom Penh
Clean and modern with updated carpet and tiling throughout, the Star Royal has just one quirk: the hallways run the perimeter of what would have made a lovely courtyard were it not for the fact that a tin roof hides the ground below. Perhaps they ran out of space and needed a covered area to do... more

Red Hibiscus Hotel and Restaurant
227 Sisowath Quay, Phnom Penh
A Travelfish reader directed us to this new entry in the crowded riverside hotel marketplace (see, folks, we really do use your feedback). It aims to be a boutique hotel for well-heeled travellers, and we agree for the most part with our reader: these are some pretty darn elegant rooms for the... more
