Though the place looks like a conference centre from hell -- it has to be one of the ugliest hotel buildings in Phnom Penh, with a tacky, 1980s interpretation of Khmer architecture -- it's actually a decent choice. The Cambodiana remains popular, no doubt due to its prime riverside setting. The riverside rooms have outstanding views over the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers. Rooms however are well worn and the décor hints that the whole place could use a refurbishment. Most are deluxe but they also have a bunch of what they term cabanas -- these however are really just standards within walking distance of the small pool. Request a riverview deluxe if you stay here, as the cabanas are pretty rundown. The aptly-named Lobby Bar, located in the front of the hotel, has a great wine selection and half-price, $4 glasses of wine from 16:00 to 20:00. It's also a who's who for spotting government officials as well as lawyers and judges from the Khmer Rouge tribunal. The nightclub at the back of the hotel, The Qba, is a bit cheesy, with wide gold columns and soft lighting, but features near nightly live entertainment that sometimes displays the best -- and the worst -- of popular Cambodian music. Walk-in and internet rates will give you a discount of at least 50% on the following rates, to which you should add 10% tax. Breakfast is included. There's no charge for up to two children under 16 sharing their parents' bed.

about the architectural past of the hotel - 18th May, 2009
I am a permanent resident of PP. I visit from time to time the cambodiana for the pastry shop and the pool whos got an outstanding view on the Bassac and Mekong. Reading the review one might think the Cambodiana is a cheezy piece of architecture from the eighties. Its neo traditionnal khmer roofs have actually been designed in the late sixties by Mister Lu Ban Hap in charge of Phnom Penhn's urban development and planning during the sixties. This choice is still relevant as it matches perfectly with the other and more ancient traditionnal buildings visible in the Phnom Penh skyline when one travels down the bassac by boat along the khmer capital. It must be added that the facade of the building and the basement have been severely altered by the owner who took over the hotel in 1992. So the original design of Mister Lu Ban Hap is defenitely spoiled. I just want to say that Ur judgement of the Hotels architecture especialy of its roofs is a bit hasty and lacks historical perspective with all respect due to Ur website very well done on the other hand.
