Okay Guest House
Value for money

What we say:
Located just west of the Cambodiana Hotel, a short moto ride from the river, the Okay Guest House has gone down in recent years as its prices have gone up. Most of the rooms are clean and spacious, many with private bathrooms and a few with air-con. But the place is constantly swarming with hordes of backpackers and the street outside fills with tuk tuk drivers and vendors trying to sell to them. The large restaurant in front is always packed, whether it's to watch TV or to drink and hang out. Okay is a great place to meet like-minded travellers who like to share a beer and a spliff, but if you're not into the fast-friends backpacker scene and the noise and security issues that go with it, this isn't the place for you. The staff speak excellent English and keep advance bookings made over the phone.

Good socialable backpackers
Its probably not to everyones taste but Okay is an excellently run backpackers that offer every service you could need why you are in Phnom Penh. The best thing about the place is the location, once you are staying you can walk to most places within the city, and anywhere you can't walk to one of the workers (who all double up as tuk-tuk drivers will take you there), I don't know why some people weren't happy with them- they were always friendly and just trying to make a living when I was there. Whether its some advice on where to go, a bus to the next town, a motorbike or a good meal. Okay will sort you out. The large resturant is a great place to meet people too.

Great place
Hi everyone!! I am very often stay in the Okay!!! they provide very good service and Phauly, Map and Mom makes you feel at home. Wi-Fi is free now and they sell a wide range of bus tickets to go to every corner of the country. The big lunch place it gives you the opportunity to meet other travelers and share trip's experience. So eh! if a tuck-tuck or motor driver tells you that the Okay is full do not believe him, probably is trying to take you to another guesthouse for some commission,go and check it for your self. The Okay has more than 70 rooms, I'm sure it will be one for you!!! Not Okay
My experience with Okay was that it is little more than a backpacker ghetto and extremely manipulative. They have plenty of strategies to separate you from your money and I, personally, found some of it disturbing. They have a written record of how many meals you buy there, how many drinks you consume, you are expected to use their travel service (most people do) so they know where you go. I purchased a ticket to Siem Reap from them and when we got to our destination the gates to the bus compound were locked behind us when the bus pulled in and, only certain tuk-tuks were allowed inside. No passengers could get out of the compound until the padlock was removed and the lucky-tuks taken care of. Some tuk-tuk drivers knew people by name because certain guesthouses were told ahead of time who was coming and, I heard, not always with the person's knowledge. Destination guesthouses may be run by a relative. I stayed at Okay for a total of four nights (three before Siam Reap, one after) and, I like to make my own travel arrangements, find my own restaurants, etc so, they knew from their records that I wasn't using many of their services. Their attitude toward me became pretty pissy when I got back from Siem Reap. To be fair, most of their room prices, size and quality are about the same as other guesthouses and hotels in the city but, I don't like their business strategy. If you do a little leg-work you can do much better than Okay around Phnom Penh. I have one piece of advice for anyone who wants to take advantage of their “hospitality” - count your change. They tried to charge me for an extra day when I checked out for the last time.

Good place
I stayed here during the water festival for a whole week and came back later for a few more days. There is a variety of rooms for every price, they are in general good value, and clean. The restaurant is a good hang out place to meet other travellers, and the location is great, only a few blocks from the palace, the river etc. Good thing is that absolutely everything can be organised and arranged through the guesthouse which makes it easy and saves you a lot of time.

Not Okay
We had been recommended to stay here by someone how had stayed here some years ago. After having been travelling through Russia, Mongolia, China, Vietnam for 4 months and staying in another guesthouse in Phnom Penh we were very disappointed by the pushyness and unfriendliness we experienced here. They seem to have success now and they try to squeeze dollars out of you wherever they can (some services are extremely overpriced). The Wifi costs 2 dollars a day and is practically not useable if two people are using skype at the same time in the internet café across the road (which is affiliated to the guesthouse and provides the Wifi). Room quality and cleanliness is good in the large dbl room we had. Food is OK but not cheap.

Tuk tuk driver scam
Accomodation and facilities were very good and cheap. most staff were helpful and polite at all times. My complaint is against one of the OKAY guesthouse Tuk tuk drivers. on a tour he suggeted we could visit an orphanage on the outskirts of phnom peng. we visited this very poor orphanage and were absolutely humbled at how lovely the kids were, 73 in all ranging in age from babies to 18/19 year olds. Their carers work voluntarily and obviously do a very difficult job to the best of their abilities. We brought rice, some games and gave a small amount of money towards its running costs. we were going to buy the rice in a market, but the driver explained he knew a rice seller that would give us a better deal. at this seller it cost 42 dollars for 50 kg bag. at the time i felt it was expensive but as i didn't know price of rice i went along with it. Imagine my anger and disgust a few days later in Siem reap when i priced a 50 kg bag of rice for 22 dollars. it is obvious this driver and rice seller are skimming of 20 dollars from unsuspecting tourists like myself, and more so the orphans and orphanage staff. It makes me sick to my stomach, that people would do this. I write this to highlight this to fellow travellers that would like to help. yes definately help orphanages if you can, but price goods in a couple of places to ensure you and the orphanage are getting a fair deal. Please allow this on website

Comfortable and affordable
We were given a choice of double rooms with air con, shower, and tv at Okay - one very large one without a window for $12 or a smaller one with an interior window for $10. Compared with what we spent previously in Phnom Penh ($20 for a double with air con), we were really pleased with it. The shower was great, it was clean, and the interior window didn't make the room too noisy. Another perk was the extensive travel service in the reception. The front desk was eager to help with any sort of travel arrangements, and several buses picked passengers up in front of the hotel.

Accurately Named
During out three-week visit to Cambodia, we used the Okay Guesthouse as our base, staying there three different times. On the upside, they were kind enough to store some luggage while we were away, were fantastic about holding a room for us and having it ready when we returned (we needed a triple and they only have two). On the downside, the staff are a bit pushy about arranging tuk tuks and the waitstaff have mixed attitudes (a couple are quite rude and unhelpful but others are lovely). On one of our visits, we did find some ants in the room but staff promptly sprayed and changed the bedding. One thing that's excellent is that they have an on-site restaurant with good food and reasonable prices (and which also draws a few travellers in which is always nice)...though we were surprised to see ''toilet paper'' on the menu and to learn that we had to pay for each roll that we needed (even though we stayed for quite a few nights). At 15 cents per roll, it wasn't worth arguing about. All in all, a lovely place to stay - we'd stay there again and, in fact, we did!

Secure and comfy
This was our most expensive digs in Cambodia at 13$ for aircon/kingsize/cable/top floor clean paradise. Huge bed in a huge room, with actual decor. Tuk Tuk drivers are honest and the travel service can be helpful. Huge recommendation from me.

Better than OK
We spent 3 nights here and found the place to be a good solid option. Room was clean, adequate and quiet. Staff were friendly and helpful. Although you get a much better price if you arrange a deal with the auto's outside yourself rather than asking the hotel to assist. Restaurant wasn't bad for breakfast and as its always packed other foods must be good too? Their internet cafe opposite was very slow - a much better option can be found round the corner. All-in-all a good option.

Good Location, Decent Rooms
Stayed here a few times, so obviously I think it's pretty good. We had a fan double with hot water for $8. The bathrooms are teeny tiny, but the water is nice and hot with great pressure. The location is great for walking just about anywhere. The dining room downstairs is always packed because the food is dirt cheap, but only occasionally good. Restaurant staff double as moto drivers and always want to know what your plans are for the day and seldom offer good prices for tours. Only had to change rooms once due to a smell in the bathroom (ahh, Cambodian plumbing) which they were very nice about. Internet across the street is a part of the hotel and very cheap with a pretty fast connection.

Pretty good!
Stayed here twice, first time stayed in a small a/c room with small bathroom for $10, second time stayed in much bigger, nicer room with a/c and pretty big bathroom for $12. Food well worth trying and inexpensive! Tuk tuk drivers double as waiters and do sometimes bother you a little too much. Would recommend this place, but if you're heading to Siem Reap and book through this guesthouse I would NOT recommend their affiliated ''hello paradise guesthouse'' as they ruined 3 shirts of ours in their laundry - called us liars and told us they had experience with people lying as this had happened 3 times before to them, then threatened to call the (incredibly corrupt!) police...!

is it really okay ?
We stayed six days there, nice and comfortable, also clean and not expensive. But unfortunately a racist family own the Okay. It's ironic that in our country, we fight everyday against the racism, but in Asia (at Okay Guest House) we saw an Asian traveller receive bad treatment by Madame Okay. Come and visit and you'll meet this Madame Okay spoiling her children, and deeply fall in love with money, hanging around all day in her guesthouse carrying her hand bag, full of cash. We felt ashamed (as a European tourist) when we were there.

Something to learn
Nice place, good price, good location, clean, and friendly staff. Owned by a Chinese family, has delicious food too with a reasonable price. Good place to stay while you are in Phnom Penh -- just make sure that you are not an Asian person (except Chinese), because this guesthouse is only friendly and welcoming to Caucasians. We had a not nice experience, because we travelled with our Asian friend and they treated our Asian friend with no respect. But still, Okay Guest House is a highly recommended place to stay in Phnom Penh, if you can ignore this matter.

Over 18s only
The guesthouse was really busy, full of European travellers drinking beer. Rooms were surprisingly nice with fan, TV and a bathroom. Everything is clean and staff are friendly. Food was oily and well priced, though not ultra cheap. However, we had to leave after one night because we didn't feel comfortable staying there. If you are under 18 (we are all 16-year old girls travelling alone) I think it would be better to stay somewhere else, or stay here with someone older in your group. It wasn't scary but people were drinking a lot of beer, and we could hear someone throwing up in the middle of the night which was weird. Staff were friendly but a bit overly friendly at times. There were NO Asians staying then when we were there. So if you are Asian it may weird you out a bit.

Not okay, the best!
Their best twin room was big, spotless, with air-con and TV for $12. Ask to stay in their main building where the restaurant is, as the standard is generally much better. The restaurant is excellent if you want to try local food at a very reasonable price (especially breakfast). While dining in the restaurant, organise for one of the friendly staff (who double as tuk-tuk drivers, tour guides, waiters etc) to take you to see any of the sights for a fairly reasonable price. Our tuk-tuk drivers actively watched out for our safety, and although we paid a little bit extra for the ride, we felt safer, and I personally didn't mind contributing to the guesthouse after eating and drinking their cheap food and beer, and after all the help they gave us on our trip. We liked that the guesthouse encourages guests to contribute to Phnom Penh in more meaningful ways -- for instance teaching monks to read English or organising visits to orphanages.

Better than Okay!
Our room was $10 with A/C, a TV and an extra bed. We were supposed to have hot water too, but didn't and we never got around to asking about it. The staff were nice, the food wasn't that good, but I enjoyed the lively restaurant/lobby atmosphere. Great for meeting other travellers! Each room has a book that you keep track of orders on and pay at check-out. We got our Vietnam visas in 24 hrs for $34 and booked our bus to HCMC through them. It was very easy and convenient. Also, Pencil grocery store is just around the corner and has everything.

Not okay by far
Although the rooms are cheap, they really make most of their money on tours, food and tuk-tuks that they push upon you. It's tricky as it's located away from any other amenities so you kind of have to resort to using theirs. Their food is poor and a rip off, and the staff are just concerned about money coming into the books. We hired a tuk-tuk for the day, only the driver disappeared after a few hours and sent his mate, who then got annoyed at us for taking too long and then wanted more than the agreed rate. We detest the tuk-tuk drivers with passion, they are just greedy and not content with a good rate. The service is atrocious and I wouldn't recommend staying here. Not okay at all!

Value for money
My email booking was not received... though I think it is more that they are not into them. They gave us a room (hot water, fan) for $10 and gave us the option of moving in the morning to a cheaper one which we did (cold water, fan for $6). I would say that the rooms are good value but bring spray if you are averse to ants. Restaurant serves good meals at cheap prices. Main male receptionists rather surly but the remainder of staff were all really nice and the waiters seem to double as the tuk tuk drivers. We had a good deal on the tuk tuk -- $10 for full half-day which also included the killing fields. We got one driver from outside to go around town to the markets and he was nasty, so at least you know that the guys from inside are nice. Only downer is that really the restaurant/communal space is not good enough for chilling and mixing with people -- it is so damned busy you don't feel like you can chill out because there are people waiting for tables.

Don't judge by the name!
Stayed here a month and could have stayed longer. Very clean rooms, great staff (ask to see more rooms if you're not happy with the first one), everything you need. The kickbacks to tuk-tuk drivers really help when you are lost with a non-English speaking driver! Everyone knows this place. I'll be staying there again next time I come back.

More than okay
I'm staying here now and really like it. Room is spacious (got myself a double for US$10). Bathroom is tiny but the hot shower works very well. Location-wise it is an amazing choice. It's walking distance to many attractions. Yes, there are cheaper options in PP, but this one, I think, is worth every penny.

Good enough for most
Not a bad place to stay, air-con room from $8. Safe enough, friendly staff, who though trying to sell you their tours, generally offer a good service. Food was cheap and plain, but good to start off with. Very safe and pleasant, though not an upmarket place, good enough for us flashpackers. We were unfortunate enough to witness a guy being hauled out unconcsious -- who later died, but that's to do with his personal habits, rather than a reflection on the place. We stayed twice, and if going back would go there again for the value for money and cheap food.

Good choice, rude staff
The guesthouse is a good pick and in a great location. My room was with air-con, TV and bathroom for only $8, good value. The man at the front desk is a little cranky, and very pushy for his own tours, but the rest of the staff are friendly.

Okay...
This guesthouse pays out huge commissions to tuk-tuk and moto drivers. Every driver we met wanted to take us to Okay GH. As our first-choice place was full, we were taken here by our tuk-tuk driver. Triple room, en suite, fan US$7. Situated directly opposite a cheap internet cafe. Good location very near the river. Rooms were small but clean. Good for travel needs, tours, although staff were a little pushy. We booked our Mekong Delta tour into Vietnam from here (3day/2night, approx $30). Get your Vietnam visa from elsewhere. Okay were charging $36, instead of the going rate of $30.

Brilliant!
Stayed here on return to Phnom Penh from Siem Reap. First room we had for one night was a bit grotty (but then we're a fussy couple, I'm sure lots of people would love it) then we changed rooms (from 9USD to 12USD) and got a really nice place. The place had great atmosphere, loads of good DVDs, good (very cheap) food -- what more could you ask for? Found the staff all very friendly too.

Home away from home
Loved it. Home away from home. Great value -- and I am a 46-year old mother of two accustomed to five stars. Can't wait to get back. Met great people -- guests and staff. Very clean. Wouldn't stay anywhere else. Transport was easy and convenient. Felt safe all the time. Nice public area to meet and greet people plus flexible room arrangements make it a great, central choice. Can't say enough good stuff about it.

Okay is the word
We stayed her for five days and it was basically ok. Staff were a bit pushy about overpriced tours, though. Food, internet and other services were convenient. The rooms are not all particularly secure, though, and I didn't feel a great deal of trust with the staff. They were not willing to help with any information and services that did not involve a profit for them. They also leave the rooms open after cleaning them, with the keys hanging in the doors.

My worst guesthouse
If you are an asian, do not stay here. The people at the guesthouse are quite racist and I received very bad treatment. Aside from the bad service, the guesthouse location is very difficult to find. It is situated on a quiet street and there are two buildings owned by Okay guest house. I guess because I am an Asian, I got the poorer condition room. The room is ugly and the bathroom is not even considerable as a bathroom. It is just a man-made screen and pipe which cuts into one of the corner of the room. It is terrible here and I stayed just one night. I am sure there are better guest house than this. Take your own risk if you want to stay here. This is the worst guesthouse of my entire trip.
