For a former home, this hotel is decidedly un-homey though it's a popular place that always seems to be full. The converted residence, easily recognisable by its garish pink exterior, features large, spotless, air-con rooms -- a stark contrast to the long line of grungy fan-room joints on either side. The staff are friendly enough, though only the manager and owner speak a word of English. Though they come with all the desired amenities, they left us feeling a little cold and uninvited. The lack of furniture and the stiff curtains and bedspreads make it feel like a motel room and not a home-away-from-home. The cafe downstairs serves unremarkable meals and their breakfasts in particular would benefit from an oil change. The upstairs rooms can sleep up to six people, which isn't a bad deal for large groups and families. If you're looking for a single or a double, Simon's only makes sense if you really, really want to stay in the Lake area -- otherwise for the price there are better-appointed guesthouses in much more inviting areas.

Spacious rooms and clean - 20th July, 2009
We stayed 3 nights in Simons Guesthouse in July 2009. We moved in here after a less than pleasurable experience in a nearby GH. Although the rooms are a little outside the normal 'backpacker' budget, We found the rooms to be spacious and clean and the staff to be quite friendly. The staff were a great help after my travel buddy was hit by a moto - they provided ice and cared for him and showed genuine concern. While I agree that the food is less than desirable at their restaurant, you don't have to eat there as there are a number of other eating options on the same road.

Not so Pretty in Pink - 3rd March, 2007
This ''pink'' Lodge has the potential to be a great, beautiful guesthouse, but its not. The rooms are big, but the bathrooms need work, the air-con doesnt work, and the staff even came in our room when we were out and turned down our air, and our fans . The building is not taken care of,and the staff seems like it picks and chooses its guests, they turned away a nice single gent while I was checking in even though they had rooms! The electical is unsafe, our lights were flickering the whole time. It was like staying a overprotective Relatives house that you couldnt wait to leave...Yikes. Its too bad because it is a beautiful old house, but its a shame it isnt better taken care of and run better. There are better choices, stay somewhere else.
