Malis sets itself apart from the score of other lakeside places by not being on the lake. This will be a major downside for some, but the family-owned Malis also attracts a more straightlaced, low-key crowd, has clean rooms at good prices, a friendly, welcoming staff and a whole bunch of peace and quiet to spare. The rooms are basic but spacious and clean. While the building is plain, it's set back from the road and surrounded by a few trees, providing a sanctuary that's still in close proximity to all the bars and restaurants lining the street outside the gate. Because there's no hammock-strewn, lakefront porch on which to lounge, smoke weed and watch movies, you will miss the debauchery and noise that comes with that scene -- which you may or may not prefer. A restaurant on the premises offers a selection of Western and Khmer dishes. This is a great place to hole up if the Boengkak Lake scene is beginning to irk you. The owner speaks French well and his son is friendly and speaks impressive English.

* Travelfish researchers visit and review properties on an anonymous basis. By that we mean they show up, in person, and pretend to be either be a potential guest, or somebody looking for a room for a friend or relative. Where possible the researcher will inspect at least a couple of rooms. The rates you see above are what either the desk staff told us they were, or what were in the brochure when they just told us to quit bugging them and look in the brochure. For mid-range hotels and up, always shop around online for a competitive rate. Click here to find out more about what makes Travelfish different with regards our accommodation reviews.
