Frangipani only has seven rooms, and this is probably part of the reason the hotel is so quiet and serene. Set in a gated 1960s-era home, with an outdoor canopied reception area, Frangipani is the place we'd recommend our parents stay if they came for an extended visit. Rooms are decorated in an interesting mix of traditional Khmer and modern touches: handmade silk bedspreads, stone Linga statues on the desk, walls painted bright blue. Suite rooms come equipped with full kitchenettes, complete with stove, fridge and cabinets. They also have a dining table, a big bathroom, and a living room area with a small flat-screen TV. A second location in a modern building at 25 Street 71 near the Mao Tse Toung/Monivong intersection is very nice but much less charming, with rooms priced between $40 and $60.

* Travelfish researchers visit and review properties on an anonymous basis. By that we mean they show up, in person, and pretend to be either be a potential guest, or somebody looking for a room for a friend or relative. Where possible the researcher will inspect at least a couple of rooms. The rates you see above are what either the desk staff told us they were, or what were in the brochure when they just told us to quit bugging them and look in the brochure. Modern and pretty - 20th January, 2010
Set around a canopied courtyard, FV is a quiet, spacious and charming retreat that takes you far away from the maddening crowds plying the riverfront. Rooms are big, loft-style affairs that are nicely furnished in a spa-meets-Ikea kind of way, and the restaurant out front, IMHO, is one of the best in the area. The neighborhood is the same idyllic, tree-lined area where many of the NGOs set up shop, and is surprisingly very close to Tuol Sleng.
