Description
This very well-located guesthouse has a range of rooms, though watch your head as you climb the stairs. The place feels a little pokey but you could do far worse and this is a popular option with return visitors. California 2 is also well-known as a great source of information for travelling around Cambodia -- some swear it's the best in town on that score. All rooms have private bathroom, air-con, hot water, fridge and cable TV -- some people find the interiors a bit dimly lit, but still clean and pleasantly decorated. Be warned however that it's popular with single men who seem to find a new Cambodian girlfriend every night, some of which they met hanging out in the hotel's restaurant/lobby. The restaurant downstairs does standard international fare -- pizzas, pasta and steaks. Their fish tacos are popular, and the staff are friendly and helpful.

California 2 Closing May 5 -
By gkleinman ( total comments: 1  More information please ) Stayed here 4/2008
An important note. The California 2 Guesthouse is closing its doors in the river front location on May 5th. I stayed at this guest hose last week and had a blast. Amazing staff and a bar downstairs that you won't want to leave. The bed was a little uncomfortable (even by Cambodian standards) but all in all I had an absolute blast staying at C2! Sad to see that it is going to close. Hope they find a new location and re-open.

OK room. Great location. Clean room. Hot, hot shower. Lots of hookers.

Quite good but a bit shabby -
By nugsy ( total comments: 11  More information please ) Stayed here 12/2004
California 2 is quite friendly and reasonably priced, but the rooms are a bit shabby. If you don't mind the prostitutes in the lobby it's ok.

Good Riverside Choice -

Great location in amongst the mix of Sisowath Quay. Good info and friendly staff.

re California -
By Silvio ( total comments: 3  More information please )
The owner was a helpful guy and the food was pretty good value but overall the California isn't such a great place for couples to stay. The room was fairly worn but more importantly my wife was embarrassed by the number of sex tourists and mini skirt wearing hookers coming in and out of the building at all hours.

Good place to sleep and to talk -
By huellea ( total comments: 2  More information please ) Stayed here 3/2003
We stayed at California 2 for two nights; room was a little dark, but clean, with nice decoration. The place is very central and we could talk with interesting people there.

Bright Lotus 1 Guest House
#22 Street 178
The Bright Lotus Guesthouse is in a fabulous location, just across from the National Museum and behind the FCC on the riverfront. It has spotless rooms with air-con, TV, private bathrooms with hot water and pleasant shared verandas. Staff are friendly, too. We've had a couple of reports of them... more

Indochine 2 Hotel
28-30 Street 130, Phnom Penh
Located just off the river on Street 130, this spotless hotel is a great choice, offering big, air-con rooms with private bathroom. It's a bit of a tour-group haven though, so it can sometimes be hard to get service during mass check-ins and... more

Indochine Hotel
251 Sisowath Quay, Phnom Penh
Next door to the Sunshine Hotel, the Chinese-style Indochine is very clean and well-kept, but rather featureless. Some of the rooms are huge -- the triple on the ground floor is massive. Indochine has a second branch (see Indochine 2 Hotel) which is the better,(and newer, of the... more

Lyon D'Or
#12, Street 110, Phnom Penh
Located just around the corner off Sisowath Quay on Street 110, this mid-sized hotel has good and very clean rooms, all with private bathroom, cable TV and air-con. The most expensive are the only ones with a view. The staff can be very indifferent. The restaurant downstairs does good French... more

Cozyna Hotel
1A Sisowath Quay
Wedged between the Amanjaya and the Bougainvillier, the Cozyna has functional rooms with some fine river views. Given rates are considerably lower than Cozyna's neighbours, you could do far worse than choosing a room here. Bring earplugs as noise can be a problem. The cheapest rooms here have no... more

Riverside Hotel
Corner of Sisowath Quay and Street 94, Phnom Penh
The Riverside Hotel, on the northern end of Sisowath east of Wat Phnom, is a fine option if you want a quiet, peaceful view of the river rather than being in the middle of the action. Rooms are clean, spacious and functional with a phone, TV and... more

Dara Reang Sey Hotel
#45E Street 118, corner of Street 13, Phnom Penh
This hotel and restaurant expanded in February 2006 to include newly renovated rooms in a building across the street. All rooms have hot water bathrooms and Dara Reang Sey is just two blocks from the river, but that's where the good stuff stop. Rooms in the older building, on the south side of... more

The River-Star Hotel
185 Sisowath Quay - corner of Street 118, Phnom Penh
The River-Star has a mix of larger rooms with beautiful views of the river and smaller rooms with no windows. Their promotional brochure brags that even the bathrooms have river views but don't let that fool you -- it appears that in only one bathroom does your shower have a large window. This... more

Angkor International Hotel
#38-50 Street 148, Phnom Penh
The Angkor used to be a rundown old dump and that's still half true. When the new wing is full they still book people into rooms in the old one, which is a musty, cruddy mess with the same price tag. The neighbourhood, as well as the hotel itself, aren't much to look at, but the new lobby has a... more
