Opened in mid-2012, Monsoon offers reasonable flashpacker value in a location that puts you two minutes' walk from the riverside and around the corner from the Old Market.

The white outer facade is a little wonky, but a creative inside design has obviously been well thought out. Rooms come in three styles, and while the most expensive balcony editions offer more space, they face the street so when the building lights up at night you might feel more on display than the shadow puppets in reception. Twin and double rooms in the back of the building offer more privacy but fewer windows.

Despite these slight downfalls, all rooms are bright yet cosy with water-hyacinth woven beds, custom-made wood furniture, silk lampshades and flower murals. They're also stacked with creature comforts like air-con, tea- and coffee-making facilities, lock boxes, fridges, free WiFi and TVs with 79 channels.

All rates include American or continental breakfast, and the hotel has a restaurant/bar/coffee shop to go with two computers in an ambitiously named "business centre".
