Happy 11 Backpackers

Lives up to its name

What we say: 4 stars

Situated in a relatively quiet, mainly residential neighbourhood that's a five-minute walk to the river and a short moto ride to the Royal Palace, Happy 11 is a good budget choice that's especially popular with the younger set.

Tile floor rooms are basic but boast clean private bathrooms, plenty of space and choice of fan or air-con. Most look out over the street and get plenty of natural light, but traffic noise isn't a major issue thanks to the low-key location.

While the rooms offer solid value, what really sets Happy 11 apart is its breezy rooftop bar/restaurant/chill area/garden. Jack Johnson plays in an almost constant loop (could be worse but a little variety would be nice) and the roof is a great place to while away a late afternoon in a hammock. There's also a pool table, a selection of DVDs, free WiFi (also available in the lobby but doesn't work so hot in the rooms) and an ever-present crew of backpackers to chat with. It gets lively later in the day when cheap cocktails and beer starts to flow. Ask for a lower floor room if wanting to hit the pillow early or to avoid the hike up a stairwell as there are no lifts. The friendly staff can arrange tickets, tours and visas.
