Despite being a short stroll from Phsar Kabko street market and a quick moto ride to Independence Monument and the river, Hotel Nine is an oasis of calm with an exceptional staff.

It's run by a funny and helpful Aussie and his staff provide excellent, friendly service. Styled in soothing cream and coffee shades, the 16 rooms come in varying sizes and are equally welcoming. Each is equipped with mosquito screens at the windows, TV, safe, air-con and mini-bar. The two suites are ideal for families with sofas that convert into single beds. Go for a ground floor room if you don't want to contend with a sweeping spiral staircase, but keep in mind that the upper floor editions offer spacious balconies and are probably a bit quieter as fewer guests walk past.

Guests are invited to make their mark by supporting the work of an anti-trafficking NGO and placing their handprint on the wall for posterity. Highly recommended, but do book ahead as the Nine is often full. Discounted rates can often be scored online.
