Lovely Jubbly Place

Bargain dorms

What we say: 3.5 stars

Bargain beds are becoming harder to find in Phnom Penh, but Lovely Jubbly Place is bucking the trend by adding to the city’s scant supply of dorms. With a concrete-walled industrial aesthetic and close proximity to riverside, Lovely Jubbly has quickly become popular with backpackers since it opened in early 2014. For the uninitated, ‘lovely jubbly’ is a British phrase meaning great or fantastic, and this guesthouse tries hard to live up to expectations.

Lovely Jubbly is on Street 19, in an expanding row of guesthouses just around the corner from the bars and restaurants of Street 172. The Royal Palace and Wat Phnom are each a five-minute ride away, and riverside is in easy walking distance. During the day, the road is a bustling thoroughfare for coconut vendors, school children and grandmas in cyclos returning from the market. Stepping into Lovely Jubbly is rather like walking through a wormhole — out of the heat and colour of the street and into an icy-cool monochrome restaurant and bar.

There’s WiFi throughout (it’s stronger on the lower floors), a free-to-use pool table and the delightfully helpful staff can arrange tours, transport and visas. They’ll also pass on their local insights with restaurant recommendations, shopping tips and nightclub knowledge. The steep stairs to the rooms will keep you fit after indulgences at the restaurant — the breakfast menu has a good selection and the food is a tasty mixture of Asian and western picks.

Dorm norm.

Dorm norm.

Most of the accommodation is dorm beds, with huge, firm mattresses on two-storey bunk beds. Each guest has a private locker and dorms have their own bathrooms, with separate showers and toilets to keep the queues down. There’s not much space left over, although one of the dorms has a small balcony. The rooms can feel a bit dark and stuffy, especially when curtains are kept closed against the sun. The air-con is strong, and necessary in those rooms without much other ventilation.

Flashpackers might want to take a look at the few private rooms — you won’t gain much in space, as most of the room is taken up by a generously sized bed, but you’ll get a bathroom of your own. A lack of windows and the concrete theme makes the rooms serene escapes or claustrophobic cells, depending on your disposition.

Sweet street.

Lovely Jubbly Place is a great choice for travellers doing their best to stretch their budget, and those looking for a comfortable place to crash after a day of exploring. The bar is a sociable place to meet new friends and the location is handy for the main sights, local coffee shops and street food.
