Kampot Guesthouse
Okay, but tours get a hard sell

What we say:
Just up the road from Blissful, Kampot Guesthouse has spotless, well-sized rooms priced across a range of budgets, all set in a mammoth building that's clean enough and has a large terrace but lacks any decorative appeal. A restaurant on site serves Khmer and limited Western food that we hear is of pretty poor quality. While the rooms are quite a good price, Kampot gets more than its fair share of complaints regarding hard selling of in-house tours. Without the character of Blissful and with this hassle, this remains an overflow choice.

Good room
We had a large double room for $15, this was not in the main building but the smaller building behind the bar. It was really quiet and decent room. Bathroom was a bit basic. Staff were not very friendly.

Good memories
This place is very cool. I spent 3 weeks there, and i can say that I have lot of very good memories there. Rooms are great, and food too. But the most important thing is that people who work there are really nice. The atmosphere of this guesthouse is really familiar.

Quiet, fine.
4Just stayed here a couple of nights, $10 for a fan room. Nobody mentioned any tours to me at all. The room was large and quiet. There's wifi and a nice garden with tables to eat at. I thought the staff were friendly and helpful. I preferred staying here to blissful which was too much of a scene for me.

Fine for the money
Not bad location with lots of other guesthouses and tour companies on the same street. Nice garden restuarant and some space upstairs to sit and enjoy the breeze. Room was nothing special but fine for the price that we paid. Didn't find them pushy about tours at all.

Good place
Enjoyed my stay here, the staff are all nice and accommodating, plenty of tour information but not pushy about it. Slept well in the big room with high ceilings and no windows.

not too bad
we turned up at chinese new year and got the last room. double fan for 10 dollars a night. the room was ok and nobody there even mentioned their tours to us even though we were there for a week.they always helped us with bus tickets and tuk tuks. the service in the restaurant is slow ( but thats normal) and the food isnt that good at all. PLUS they lock the gates at midnight so you have to try waking someone up which often takes a while.

ok
We had a clean room with cable tv and the restaurant was nice and shady. Maybe it doesn't look great from outsidebut it is not a bad option at all.

Dodgy wiring, dodgy tours
Interested to read next comment. We were hassled into staying here and then onto their tour. The tour didn't deliver what it was supposed to and was more expensive than others. As for the guesthouse, it had dodgy wiring meaning that to have the fan on you had to have the light on, everything was wired into the light switch. Nothing terrible but no charm.

Hard sell city
Room we had was ok - but shower was a mere trickle and the TV didn't work. We asked if they could be fixed for us which the manager said he would immediately attend to, but needless to say nothing was done nor did the manager explain why nothing was done. Food was average but plentiful -- service was slow considering we were the only people there. The real problem we had with the place (and which ultimately made us leave Kampot early was the hard sell on the tours. As soon as we had checked in the guesthouse resident tour operator asked us to look through his tour brochure and wanted us to make a decision about booking a tour. We said that we would like to look around the town first and get an idea of prices etc, but then he just started on about how the other tours were no good, the guide would not speak English, they would not provide what they said they would etc. We did book a tour in town (which was excellent -- recommended in 2006 Lonely Planet -- Boker Hill tour) and some staff at the guesthouse were very disparaging trying to put us off going. The guesthouse also appears to let random people who purport to be guides into the hotel who harrass you. One guy kept following us around trying to get us onto a tour with him and when we said no he then wanted us to go to some dodgy restaurant to place some safe bets -- only safe bet would be us losing our money! Didn't take him up on the tour or the gambling. We were annoyed at how the guesthouse let their guests be harrassed within the grounds of the hotel. Would not recommend it for that reason -- Little Garden Bar and Guesthouse looked very nice and staff were very corteous when we visited.

Peaceful and relaxing
Nice staff, nice rooms, pillows a bit hard, but beds otherwise comfortable. Good reception on telly and have HBO! Blissful Guesthouse Bar a 30 second walk away. Good value and comfy, shame about the hard sell on the tours though!
