The Little Garden Guesthouse is set around the corner from the same-named bar and restaurant on Kampot's riverside road, and for backpackers and flashpackers represents good value. Though the restaurant and guesthouse share the same name, they're no longer under the same management. The restaurant -- with a much nicer ambience than the guesthouse -- remains German-run while rather unfriendly Cambodians run the guesthouse. Most of their 15 rooms are well maintained and clean and all have private bathroom facilities. Their cheapest offerings, opening onto the rooftop terrace, are however pretty dire and smelt awful when we were shown one -- you're well advised to go for one of the rooms on a lower floor. They're plain but comfortable and in a convenient location just north of the town's main restaurant strip. Their fanciest air-con rooms come with TV, hot water, and if you ask you can borrow a DVD player, making them excellent value. They're plenty big enough to stick an extra bed in should you be in a travelling threesome. Prices are negotiable in rainy season. The rooftop terrace has terrific views over the river towards Bokor and the restaurant next door is a great spot to escape the heat for an afternoon or evening drink.

management ... - 23rd November, 2008
... has now changed. After extending the premises the owners have now decided to take the guesthouse off Norm, the previous manager, have renamed it the Riverside and now run it themselves. The US$18 room was nice, large, air-con, good bathroom. The fact that I had to ask for clean sheets on the first day may be an initial oversight or sign of management practices to come. Very zealous tour promotion at the front desk these days. The Little Garden Bar remains in previous hands.

Friendly and informal - 14th January, 2006
We found this to be a charming place in a beautiful location. Staff were often busy but always friendly and helpful. The tour of Bokor they arranged for us was top value. A couple of quibbles: the pillows/sheets we were given probably need to be retired, and our hot water system (which looked quite new) had a bit of an attitude problem. But if you satisfy yourself on these points, it's a lovely place to stay.

Try and get a room on the top floor - 28th January, 2010
I paid $8 and got a nice, clean room with fan and cold water. Good value and the location is great too, right on the river with good views of the sunset from the second floor balcony.

okay place to stay - 30th June, 2009
I paid $14 for a double a/c room at the side of the guesthouse, overlooking the river. The room was clean enough and comfortable, but the whole place feels a bit soulless. Can confirm it's not run by the affable Norm next door any more. The current owners were not very friendly or helpful, but they didn't give me the hard sell.

Best place to stay in Kampot! - 11th March, 2008
I stayed at the little garden bar twice - both times it was a beautiful, clean and calm place. The staff and management are very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is a brilliant place to stay on hot afternoons and the rooftops offers a great view over the river and mountains. Anybody interested in volunteer opportunities in Kampot is in good hands at the little garden bar. Oh and the food served at the restaurant is very good, also for vegetarians!

Great restaurant, nice staff - 13th August, 2007
The rooms were fine -- pretty standard and functional, but nothing to write home about. Well worth the price -- the air-con worked great. The shower was great with very hot water, but the bathroom smelled a bit musty. The best part of this guesthouse is the restaurant, by far. I had a great dinner there. Based on our experience, the staff were very friendly -- someone met us as we arrived, the owner chatted with us for a while as we ate breakfast and one of the staff went to Kampot bus station to buy bus tickets for us. We experienced none of the staff problems that other comments have noted. I would recommend this place.

Rude - 14th December, 2006
I was about to check in to the hotel, when the owner came up to me, tried a really rude, hard sell for me to make a quick decision about if I would stay there and snapped at me. The rudest encounter I have had in Cambodia. The rooms looked nice and clean, but I couldn't stay there with that atmosphere. Very hostile.

Excellent! accueil irréprochable! cuisine au top! Un charme fou! - 15th October, 2006

Not fun - 14th October, 2006
I stayed one night as I had no hot water nor a functioning toilet in my room. Staff were friendly but often nowhere to be seen.

Customer Service? - 10th December, 2005
Disappointed with this place as the customer service was non-existent. We arrived in the early evening to find the bar/restaurant closed and had trouble trying to track staff down just to pay for the room the next day. On the plus side, fan rooms are very spacious.
