If Bodhi Villa isn't chilled out enough, just keep on heading north on the zoo road and you'll eventually reach Utopia. Under German leadership and related to Utopia at Sihanoukville, this seriously hidden-away spot is on the west bank of Kampot River around 7km north of town. Facilities are rudimentary (though, miraculously, there's free WiFi), but the lodgings are clean and there's a welcoming vibe. Aside from laying around the large, wooden porch that hangs over the river eating and drinking, the main pastime here seems to involve getting wet. The many means to achieve that include jumping off the pier, floating around in inner tubes, and using a rope-swing across the river you can swim out to. A new crop of construction has sprung up providing bookend accommodation to their already existing rooms. On one side are solid dorm beds that come complete with private lockers and posts with mosquito nets and on the other, more upscale private bungalows with en suite facilities and balconies outfitted with comfy bucket chairs. The dorm rooms are clean and well-priced (considering they're free in rainy season with the understanding you'll eat your share) but the bungalows seemed overpriced for not having hot water and for their outdated decor -- the bedspreads were made of a frilly synthetic fabric and the bathroom lined with flimsy plastic. A new building with six rooms will be completed in 2011. The dogs act as though they're about to maul and devour any guest who arrives on the premises, which is a bit terrifying. While the German owner, Max, is pleasant enough, if a bit gruff, we found his wife to be an incredibly kind and helpful character who makes you feel immediately at ease. A fun laid back spot to lose a few days.

Super place!!

This place is amazing. Stayed there with my girlfriend for much longer than the planned 1 day visit. It seems they don't have dorms anymore but fitted three rooms instead. We got the last room, which they have fitted with a nice window, awaken by amazing sunrises and bird songs everyday. The staff are nice and the food is great. We are going back there again.
