Moliden Guesthouse
Beautiful wooden building, friendly staff

What we say:
This Khmer-owned hotel, which opened in 2009, is one of the best bargains in town. The location a few blocks north of the main restaurant strip, with views of the old bridge and the river, is unbeatable. It's set in a newly-constructed, old Khmer-style stilted wooden villa. The rooms, all on the second floor, connect to the ground-floor restaurant by a wide staircase made of knotty wood. Rooms are also completely wooden, with nice antique fixtures, soft lighting, and both air-con and fan, cable TV, and hot water showers. There were only five rooms when we visited, and the river view rooms were still under construction and planned for opening by late 2009. The owners have since advised the rooms are now all done and they have eleven rooms, two fan-cooled ones and nine with air-con. A shared riverview veranda has big, soft furniture for lounging. The first-floor restaurant has a range of Western options, an extensive wine list, and a river-facing outdoor patio.

If it were just a little cheaper , , ,
This flash-packer spot sold me on the location just across from the iron bridge and a very short walk to the old market area. If you want more peace and quiet then go for the options up near Bohdi Villa along the river, but if you're looking to be in town this is a better option than than those along Guest House Street. That said, it is a bit over priced for what they offer. The atmosphere is nice with the cozy wood feel, but the mattresses are a bit worn at this point and the bathroom in our room gave off a little smell. We paid about 37 USD over Agoda for the only room they had left (a deluxe twin) but decided to stay another night as we liked Kampot a lot. They tried to charge us the normal price for the extension - 45$, and I thought 37$ was too much! It must be location you are paying for, because as I said, the rooms have a worn quality to them . . . . . . and the staff while very friendly seem to have trouble getting things to go smoothly. I handed in laundry in the early morning and didn't get it back until the next night, which is a bit of a stretch for anywhere I've been so far. They consistently forgot to give us towels, as if they were short of them they'd poach them from other rooms . . . and one morning I was given spoiled milk with my coffee. I don't want to sound too harsh on them, as they were very chatty and friendly and didn't give a hard sell on anything . . . . . . but there were some overall problems that make me think I'd choose a different spot if I was to come back to Kampot. It seems to attract an older crowd and despite the very nice sitting area for an evening meal, it doesn't have a big crowd at night, though this same spot is really nice to enjoy breakfast, if you get fresh milk.

Snug as a bug in a rug
Having decided against staying in a ''guesthouse'' suitably located opposite a horrendous nightclub, we hopelessly staggered along the riverside to stumble across Moliden Guesthouse. Given some of the places we'd been shown round (including the inglorious Ta Eng Guesthouse, inhabited by cockroaches), this really was the pick of the affordable bunch. Saying that, having stayed there for a few days, we did think it was a little overpriced (we clocked up quite a bill). But it's all decorated with nice wooden shack-like decor, and is relatively clean (being new). Main problems we encountered here were one of us developing food poisoning from the restaurant downstairs (!), and then thinking we had bed bugs in the bed (which my girlfriend was banished to for three days). Turned out they were bugs from the light above that had fallen into the linen, but the food poisoning was definitely real. It is also worth noting that I (dining on my own ref: girlf's illness) waited over an hour and a half to be served a pizza in the restaurant. I didn't have the energy to complain, but plenty of others did that night who, too, were experiencing laughably bad service. This place is nice, though, and is definitely a cut above most of the other non-hedonist places to stay in the area. The staff are really friendly, and the young lad that works there is a real charmer.

Great place to stay
I stopped off for dinner and ended up staying 4 nights! I'd checked into another place, but liked the location of the Moliden and the friendliness of the staff. So one of the guys took me on his motorbike to the other place to get my stuff, and I moved in to this great little place. It's right on the river, has good food, but it's the friendly staff who make it work. I spent a couple of days just sitting with them and having a laugh. A very relaxing place to be. Highly recommended. My only gripe would be that the outdoor eating area was unuseable during the day because there was no shade.

Moliden Guesthouse Staff
Can you please change the room prices for high season from 15 USD to 25 USD per standard double and from 25 USD to 45 USD for a superior double, as our prices have changed. In low season our prices range from 13 to 45 USD. Much appreciated, Moliden Guesthouse staff.

Good option
I booked Moliden over the phone for 2 nights. The cheapest rooms appeared to be $30. The staff were very friendly (one of them even gave me a lift to the bank). The resturaunt was nice too. Upstairs there was a balcony with chairs for lounging about and watching the river. The room was clean and very new, the bathroom was the best we had in Cambodia with a proper shower! Our room was a little noisy, perhaps try and get a room away from the road. Good location and free internet. Definately a good alternative to Rikitikitavi and slightly cheaper.

Friendly and wet
We stayed for 2 nights at the beginning of September. Paid $15 with, aircon although we didn't need it. A pair of wellies might have been more appropriate. Right opposite the river and a short walk to the riverside restaurants. We did eat a couple of meals in the Moliden restaurant, the food was good if a little overpriced. The room was on the small side and a little dark due to the traditional dark wood they've used and there wasn't a great deal of water coming out of the shower, but the staff were friendly and it was a nice enough place to watch the endless rain (and flooding!)
