Kep Malibu Estates, a lovely complex set back from the main road off a dirt path, seems unsure about what it wants to be. The hotel, which opened in February 2009, features 16 rooms that vary wildly. The tents are their oddest commodity, because they are actually proper bungalows on tiled floors, with nice four-poster beds and furniture. The problem is they're surrounded by heavy plastic tarps instead of walls, which are lovely when drawn back, but feel damp when closed. The other rooms are set on two floors in a large building in front of the hotel's sizeable pool, which has canopied outdoor beds for lounging and an adjacent restaurant. The menu's fairly limited and overpriced, with curries starting at $4.50 and fruit and cheese for $6. Rooms are all large and nicely decorated, though with a slightly gaudy flair (the enormous, 80s-style portrait of the owner was our favourite.) The owner says Cambodian ministers stay in the suite, which comes with a living room and kitchenette. They're all fixed with a full suite of amenities.

* Travelfish researchers visit and review properties on an anonymous basis. By that we mean they show up, in person, and pretend to be either be a potential guest, or somebody looking for a room for a friend or relative. Where possible the researcher will inspect at least a couple of rooms. The rates you see above are what either the desk staff told us they were, or what were in the brochure when they just told us to quit bugging them and look in the brochure. For mid-range hotels and up, always shop around online for a competitive rate. Click here to find out more about what makes Travelfish different with regards our accommodation reviews.
