Simple and authentic

What we say: 3.5 stars

M'pay Bay Bungalows is named after the small fishing village where they are located. Proximity to the neighbours is perhaps one of its greatest attributes as guests can easily get a window into rural village life in Cambodia by strolling around and sampling some of the local fare. Popular with expats who need a getaway from Sihanoukville, the simple wood and thatch bungalows look out onto the sea. There's nothing fancy — the bathrooms all have scoop-bucket showers — but the bungalows are perfectly adequate, the staff are chilled-out and accommodating and it's in a beautiful location in a bay filled with excellent snorkelling possibilities. There's also a yellow sand beach a few minutes' walk away. If you're sensitive to noise you may want to bring earplugs — village life wouldn't be complete without a few crowing roosters and barking dogs. A quarter of proceeds from the bungalows go to the neighbouring Marine Conservation Cambodia who have a team of volunteers working at the bay. They are also happy to have visitors volunteer to work on various projects such as beach cleanups. Although the bungalow management seems a bit disorganised — the restaurant was closed when we visited, for example, and the management duties seem to have been left in the hands of the flustered MCC volunteers — the M'pay Bay Bungalows are a great way to see more of Cambodia than tourists usually do.
