Secluded sunseekers spot
Saracen Bay, Koh Rong Samloem. Booking office: Freedom Travel, Serendipity Beach Road, Sihanoukville T: (034) 633 830, (034) 933 829
Tucked away on a small private beach at one end of Saracen Bay and accessed by a private slow boat, or otherwise the fast boat and a walk, it's easy to forget there's anything going on outside Freedom Island.
A whopping 20 additional villas were mid-construction at the time of our last visit, including two family villas (with two adjoining rooms), so it's starting to get a bit crowded here. Nonetheless, the ensuite bungalows are not the typical wood and thatch affairs, but walled, glazed and metal-roofed rooms perched on wooden decks ideal for whiling away a few hours. Tinted windows, fans and curtains collaborate to keep temperatures down in the daytime, with electricity available 06:00 to 13:00 and 18:00 to 23:00. Their design is more appealing externally than internally; the outside put us in mind of minimalist Miami, but inside the furnishings are much more eclectic Asian. Freedom Island has some lovely touches such as a freshwater pool created at the end of a cool stream with seats built in it. The restaurant bar overlooking the water serves European fare alongside Asian favourites. When you do remember there's more world out there, snorkelling, fishing and diving trips can be arranged with the Freedom boat and the rest of the Saracen Bay beach is a four-minute walk along a short jungle path – the main stretch of Saracen Bay is in fact much prettier, sandier and wider than where Freedom Island Bungalows are positioned.
