Freedom Island Bungalows
Secluded sunseekers spot
What we say:
Tucked away on a small private beach at one end of Saracen Bay and accessed by a large private boat, it's easy to forget there's anything going on outside Freedom Island. The ensuite bungalows are not the typical wood and thatch affairs, but walled, glazed and metal-roofed rooms perched on wooden decks ideal for whiling away a few hours. Tinted windows, fans and curtains collaborate to keep temperatures down in the daytime, with electricity available 06:00 to 13:00 and 18:00 to 23:00. Externally, they put us in mind of minimalist Miami, but inside the furnishings are much more eclectic Asian. Freedom Island has some lovely touches -- there are proper sunloungers, and a freshwater pool created at the end of a cool stream is perfect for dipping your toes. The restaurant bar overlooking the water serves European fare alongside Asian favourites, and there are regular barbecues and impromptu parties instigated by affable German owner Stefan. When you do remember there's more world out there, snorkelling, fishing and diving trips can be arranged with the Freedom boat and the rest of the Saracen Bay beach is a four minute walk along a short jungle path.
