Koh Ta Kiev Bungalows is a collection of cosy, simple bungalows set back only a matter of metres from a yellow sand beach with a restaurant and bar.
There are five ensuite bungalows, all sturdily constructed with thatched roofs covering tin. Each has a lounging area with pillows, beds with bamboo frames, thick mattresses, mosquito nets and a large private bathroom. On the private balcony you'll find a hammock. Five bungalows with shared open-roof bathrooms are less resilient, made from matting walls and are just big enough for a double bed.
Prices are negotiable -- the simple double was initially quoted to us as $15 in high season, but then offered for $10, which makes it not unreasonable compared to camping or the cost of a dorm room at the other properties on the stretch. The restaurant has a small shop with fresh fruit like mangoes and the odd packet of biscuits for sale. It serves fare with prices that reflect that food is delivered by boat, but portions are generous.
The surrounding pine trees mean the beach here is not picture perfect, and there is some washed up litter from Sihanoukville, but it's still a lovely spot. Since the only pier on the beach is at Koh Ta Kiev Bungalows, day tours from Sihanoukville stop outside here and also make use of their collection of deckchairs. When we last visited staff only spoke Khmer and a smattering of English words that didn't help much; don't expect much in the way of service. An open return boat ticket is $15 from Sihanoukville.
