Cloud 9
Quiet, beautiful bungalows

What we say:
Hidden away in the trees at the western end of the beach, Australian/German-run Cloud 9 is still one of the better value spots on Serendipity, although not as much as it once was. Their time at the top of the charts has taken its toll, with prices going up while friendliness has gone down. Despite the attitude at the front desk though, it's still good value and the wooden and thatch bungalows show an attention to detail you rarely see in backpacker-targeted accommodation, such as checkerboard-tiled bathrooms and colourful hammocks. The bungalows — some with amazing ocean views — are well maintained and the bathrooms spotless, but the rooms billed as twins contain one full size double bed and a not-quite-a-twin that is little more than a sturdy cot without bedding. The downstairs area has a pleasant restaurant and bar area plus private sun-loungers. Those travelling with laptops can enjoy the free WiFi. The beachfront is rocky, but it is just a short walk to a decent stretch of sand and this location is able to offer some peace and quiet amid the gorgeous views — something lost elsewhere on Serendipity. If you're visiting over a weekend get there early to be in with a chance of a room, as Cloud 9 does not always take reservations, although some report being able to make them via email.

kind of cloudy
We stayed at cloud 9 in Nov 2009 for 6 nights in a deluxe bungalow. First of all, you should think of staying somewhere with AC, even we never thought we'd say this before our stay, but it was so very hot and lots of huminity, it was very hard to find sleep at night. The rooms are medium clean (within one week of stay the apartment didn't get cleaned ones), with quite old bathrooms. The restaurant is very nice and chilling, the food is excellent. But there is no beach in front of cloud 9, you have to walk 10 minutes to Soka Beach and have to pay 4$ to stay there (rent a sunbed), as its owned by a big beach resort. Warning: Don't take the walk at the rocky beach to Soka Beach as there were tourists getting robbed while we were there. Take the walk up the hill! What really bothered us was the loud music at night, coming from the bars next door and the cloud 9 bar itself. It doesn't stop till very late at night (5 o' clock) and the bungalows don't have windows to protect you from the noise. All in all, we thought it was just a medium choice to stay, ... Maybe stay somewhere next door, with air con and nicer / cleaner bungalows and come here for the great food and chilling atmosphere at night, would be a good advice.

A little piece of chilled out heaven
Cloud 9 is the place to go if you want to have a couple of days of perfect relaxation, which is what we needed after a succession of days on the road. The rooms are very comfy and clean, with stunning views of the sea, a view you certainly don't expect for $10 a night!(the going rate in May). The owners and staff were very welcoming, and completely understood our need to spend all day nursing a hangover in their comfy lounge chairs by the sea, drinking their delicious shakes and eating the even more delicious food! The beach and nightlife is 2 minutes' walk away, but Cloud 9 is a quiet relaxed oasis. We called ahead in the morning to reserve a room as we heard it fills up quickly, so it's worth doing that if you can. The Full Monty breakfast is also highly recommended!

Good value!! Friendly!!
I am leaving Cloud 9 today and am currently using their WiFi to write this review. I loved it here. The bungalow was small but had everything you needed. The bathrooms are basic but clean, however we had to share it with a tree frog. Haha. The balcony looked out to an amazing view of the ocean and we stayed during the full moon so it just lit up the ocean like a thousand lights. It is quiet at night but if you strain you can hear the tacky music of the bars in the distance. The location is far enough away from the noise but it's only 2 mins walk to all the action if you want it. They have sun beds on the edge of the water where my boyfriend and I lazed all day reading and sipping fruit shakes. So relaxing. (Except when the hawkers try and sell you bracelets and offers of manicures and massage...just say 'no, thank you' a few times and they will walk away. As soon as you show interest, they will sit next to you and try to sell you more!!) The food here is good quality and guest's breakfasts are 25% off the already cheap prices. The staff are very friendly and helpful with whatever your heart desires. Be it tours of the island or the Ream national park, onward bus travel, etc. The room rates on travelfish are outdated. The smallest bungalow is US$15 and 20 for larger ones, these I suspect are low season prices. Good value for money for location, cleanliness and friendliness.

Very chilled, amazing location
I was only meant to stay four nights... ended up nearly three weeks! I really fell in love with this place. Great staff, food, atmosphere and an amazing view. It was a few dollars more expensive than some other places, but trust me -- worth every cent to escape the mayhem (and loud horrible music) of the main stretch. Will definitely be back next year. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

Fantastic place to stay
Great bungalows and great breeze. The curries and Amok were fantastic and Paul the bartender is the coolest kid ever, the pets too are groovy! Definitely check out the Top Cat movie house up the hill and some of the islands in the area.

The Cove - An alternative
As most of the Lonely Planet top rated locations, the guesthouse was full when I arrived. I have been staying next door, at the Cove Beach Bungalow. They are absolutely perfect, have all the perfect hammock you are dreaming about and the perfect seaview with a great sunset. I think this is absolutely the best place in the area.

beautiful place to chill out
Located on edge of Serendipity Beach makes this a quiet, peaceful place to stay. Chill out on the hammocks or by the bar, overlooking the ocean -- great place to catch a beautiful sunset. Friendly staff. Definitely worth the few extra dollars.

The perfect location
Cloud 9 don't take bookings but if you're lucky enough to get a room you're in paradise. Great bungalows, chilled view and great staff. If you get the chance to meet Joe the new owner -- you're in for a fun time, he is as chilled as you can get. If they are booked out check out The Cove Beach Bungalows two doors down that have brilliant rooms, brilliant views and a very helpfulowner called Richard

Great place, great food
Stayed for four nights. Perfect location and atmosphere for relaxing by the beach. Order the garlic prawns and potatoes -- best dish all trip. This place is setting a standard for the rest of the area to follow.
