Good for partiers on a budget
What we say:
Just 200 metres from Serendipity beach and pier, @Home Guesthouse is a decent budget option for those wanting a good mix of partying and relaxing. You can walk out your front door and be at the night time hotspot of Occheuteal beach within minutes, but be just far enough away from the late-night party spots that noise shouldn’t be much of an issue when you’re trying to sleep. They have smartly built their rooms into a three-storey building behind their restaurant in an additional effort to get away from the noise of night time street revelries.
Rooms are either fan (US$15) or air-con (US$20-25) with either one large bed or two smaller beds. They offer discounts if you plan on staying more than a week or two and rooms can be had for as little as $10 in the low season. Rooms are clean and include a small nightstand, clothes rack and TV. All rooms have hot water and free WiFi. The rooms are a bit dark and stale for our taste because of the tiny window, but on the flip side, you shouldn’t have a problem sleeping in.
The guesthouse is Swiss-owned and, as you might guess, their restaurant serves a mix of Swiss and Khmer dishes. Swiss food ranges from US$3-10 and Khmer food from US$3 – 6. Expect the platters to be large and yummy. They also do a daily breakfast buffet in the upstairs restaurant (US$6.) In the evening, the attached bar is a great place to meet people.
A number of European expats frequent this place too, so you can get some good info about the happenings in town if you’re talkative and engage somebody in conversation. In addition to the bar and second-floor restaurant, you can catch up on your afternoon reading in the inviting courtyard the rooms are built around.
Despite being in a central location, it’s easy to miss @Home because it is scrunched between a number of other restaurants and, from the outside, you would be forgiven for assuming it’s just another restaurant. Their rooftop dining area also appears to be part of the neighbouring location and you could easily miss that as well. Once inside though, the place really opens up towards the back and you realise just how large it really is.
