Serendipity Beach Resort
What we say:
Offering five-star rooms at three-star rates, Serendipity Beach Resort is a solid choice for those seeking creature comforts. Rooms are plush, the hotel has stunning ocean views and a beautiful 30-metre pool beckons.
On first glance, one may assume Serendipity Beach is just another one of the charmless hotels here catering to the hordes of Chinese tour groups; even after entering the large, under-used lobby you might still be thinking the same thing and as you ride the cramped elevator to your floor and step out into a barren looking hallway, you may really believe you’ve made the wrong choice. But one glimpse into your stunning room and you’ll realise you’ve picked a winner.
If you’ve chosen an ocean view room, you’ll notice large sliding doors leading out to a private balcony overlooking the beach. Bathrooms offer a full enclosed shower and over-sized bathtub, a relative rarity in Cambodia. They have smartly designed the bathroom with a tub-to-ceiling window that allows you to peer through the room and out to the ocean while soaking away in the tub. Privacy in the bathroom might be a little lacking, but you can always pull down the blind.
Rooms are large and immaculately clean with plush beds covered with white linens. They are well decorated, with a brightly painted accent wall, vibrant orange couch and comfy lounge, a desk in case you need to get in a little work and a large flat screen TV. Other amenities include in-room safe, WiFi and electric kettle.
As well as the pool, the hotel boasts a gym and attached restaurant. The gym leaves a bit to be desired, with just a ramshackle collection of dated cardio equipment, but makes up for this somewhat with large glass windows allowing for an ocean view while exercising. It’s a bit of a double-edged sword though because the windows result in the gym getting hot on sunny days.
If going with a pool view room, we recommend asking for one on the ground floor. You’ll have a private sitting area behind your room located less than a metre from the pool, so you can walk out the back and dive right into the water.
Word around town is the restaurant serves a large, tasty breakfast with unlimited coffee for $4. Just be sure to get there before 11:00, when they stop serving.
Overall Serendipity Beach rates right up there with some of the other luxury resorts in town where you’ll be paying $60 or more a night. If you are a walk-in, they offer discounted rates of just $32 a night.
