Go for the bungalows
What we say:
At Otres Orchid, skip the rooms and choose one of the romantic bungalows set in a lush tropical garden — they’re charming and come with a very reasonable price tag.
You’ll find the room furnishings in the private US$25 bungalows rustic, but pleasant enough. The windows have screens, so no need for mosquito nets. An ocean breeze drifts through the bungalows located near the front, but it might get a bit warmer in the back.
The bungalows come with a private bathroom, hot water and free WiFi and though small you’ll likely be sorry to leave. The woodwork inside is exceptional and the addition of little touches like flowers on the bed just adds to its appeal. Furniture is sparse, but the beds are comfy and clean.
The double rooms built into a large wooden building (US$20) though are another story. To get to them, you first have to walk down a dirty, little alley and up a rickety wooden staircase that we wouldn’t recommend trying if you’d had a few drinks. With bars on the windows, mosquito nets and cold water, they really don’t have the same charm or appeal of the bungalows — it’s definitely worth spending the extra five dollars.
As you come onto Otres One, the Otres Orchid is the first accommodation option on the left side. Another benefit to staying here is the attached convenience market — the only brick and mortar one of its kind on Otres, and it stays open late — so if you’re looking for a snack or a drink through to late, you won’t have to go far. They also have a large concrete parking area out front with 24-hour security, so bringing your own transport shouldn’t be a problem.
The major downfall we encountered here was the uncooperative staff. Despite some of the staff noticing our arrival, we wandered around the grounds for a few minutes and then stood around near the reception area for a while before anyone decided to approach. After asking about the rooms, they seemed uninclined to show them. If they are this lackadaisical when trying to check-in, the in-house service may not be the best.
Otres Orchid is perfect if you want to get out of the backpacker scene for a bit and still keep with the rustic bungalows and tropical adventure feel. Couples old and young will enjoy it and probably want to stay longer, while single, younger backpackers may get bored as it’s not really a social spot suited to meeting other travellers.
