Beachside budget or splurge
What we say:
Elephant Garden on Otres 2 is all about options. Rather than target a specific demographic, they offer a variety of room styles in the hopes of capturing everyone from young backpackers through to older, not so budget-minded tourists as well. Will it work? They’ve only been open since early 2014 and they are still fine tuning everything, but it’s looking good so far.
Let’s talk accommodation. Prices run the gambit here from as low as US$25 and US$35 for palm or stone bungalows on the beach side near the restaurant. Rooms in this price range are pretty basic with mosquito nets, fans, minimal bamboo furnishings, and cold water bathrooms, but at least the bathrooms are private.
On the opposite side of the road, near the reception area, are the bungalows catering to higher-end tourists with rates from US$70 (fan and included breakfast) to US$85 (air-con with hot-water and included breakfast.)
Rooms with the higher rates have slightly plusher furniture, modern, Western-styled bathrooms with his and hers sinks, and rain showers.
The entire area has been well designed and decorated. A number of elephant and Buddha statues are scattered throughout the grounds, which add to the exotic feel. The palm bungalows with banana trees and colourful flowers help ease you into that tropical mood. After a quick walk around the bungalows and a wander on the beach, you will be more than ready to relax at the beachfront restaurant and order a refreshing mojito or some other fruity alcoholic beverage.
The menu doesn’t have too many options and what dishes they offer are a bit over-priced. Despite that, the ambience of the restaurant is warm and inviting. In addition to their covered lounge areas, they have a rooftop deck built on the beach just above their restaurant. If the accommodation prices are a bit out of your range, it’s still definitely worth checking out the restaurant if only to watch the sunset from the upper deck and enjoy a refreshing beverage.
The owner of Elephant Garden is considerate of his guests and makes every effort possible to ensure they are enjoying their stay. You will often seem him wandering around the grounds improving things or checking on his patrons. They currently have a pool under construction, but due to some issues it was put on hold and the owner has decided to not resume construction until the slower season so as not to disturb the guests now staying in the bungalows.
A number of families as well as backpackers were staying here when I wandered the grounds, so for the time being, it appears that the strategy is working and they are attracting a good mix of travellers. Despite the slightly higher prices on Otres Beach 2 than Otres Beach 1, it can be worth staying here if you really want some seclusion.
