Santino's Rock Star Resort
What we say:
Those looking for entertainment by night, relaxation by day and a good-times social atmosphere would do well to choose Santino’s Rock Star Resort on Otres One. With concrete and thatch bungalows set back into impressively large grounds as well as dorms and rooms above the bar, Santino’s should have a price point to match most travellers’ needs.
Santino’s is one of the many new guesthouses regularly springing up on Otres that look to cater to a number of different kinds of tourists. Starting on the low end, dorms can be had for as low as $2 in low season and $4 in high. Taking a step up into private digs, single or double fan rooms are just $4 and $7 respectively, with the amenities you might expect at such low prices, namely a fan, cold-water shared bathrooms, a mattress and a mosquito net. That’s about it. Not a luxury room for relaxing, but a decent enough place to lay your head.
Working your way up through the ranks, you can choose one of the 10 standalone thatch-and-wood bungalows set around a large grassy area for $12, including a fan and cold water. They are clean and roomy with quite a bit of charm. Khmer-style blankets line the beds and you can even expect to find a painting or two brightening the mood. All bunglows have a nice sitting area in front with a couple of chairs, a table and a hammock, which is a great place to relax and catch up on some late afternoon reading.
The concrete bungalows start at $17 and have hot water, air-con, and two free water bottles, making them some of the most reasonably priced accommodation on Otres with similar amenities. Rooms are over-sized, so much so that they feel a bit empty inside even with a large bed, wardrobe and sitting area. Since they’ve only been open six months, there is a good chance they may still decide to add a bit more furniture to use some of the extra space. Until then, it’s a great place for 10 of your closest friends to crash.
The Western staff at the attached restaurant are friendly and happy to help with anything you need. Getting social with your fellow travellers is the name of the game and Santino’s does a great job of enhancing the camaraderie with a number of night time entertainment activities like live music, spoken word poetry contests, Monday night poker and movies. Night time on Otres can otherwise get a bit quiet in tune with the laidback atmosphere of the area.
Driving down Otres Beach One, you’ll find Santino’s on the right just before you hit Mushroom Point. Because of the large number of rooms and being a relatively new business, you don’t have to worry about booking in advance, for now anyway, but that’s likely to change as their reputation grows. If you do find them booked full, just walk next door to long-time favourite Mushroom Point. They are a bit pricier, but chock full of backpacker charm.
