Mealy Chenda Guesthouse

Good option

What we say: 3 stars

With pleasant sea views, close proximity to night life and a friendly staff, Mealy Chenda Guesthouse is one of the better options on Sihanoukville’s Victory Hill. A fair number of room types and sizes caters to travellers within a variety of budget ranges.

Well kept with room for two

Well kept with room for two.

Unassuming from the outside, the property has a large central courtyard with multiple buildings and secure 24-hour private parking for guests. The guesthouse is located a couple of minutes’ walk from the nightlife of the hill yet far enough away that noise from the bars isn’t an issue.

Easy parking for cars and motos

You’ll find the staff friendly and helpful with any questions or needs you might have. Do expect them to give you a fair few options on onwards transport (to other Mealy Chenda Guesthouses) and so on — the travel agency is a core part of their business.

The rooms are as well kept and clean, with white linens. While most of the rooms we checked out were in good shape, one or two did smell a bit mouldy so ask to view your room before checking in.

All of the rooms have air-con and hot water along with a flatscreen TV, fridge, wardrobe, two free water bottles and a relaxing sitting area. Those looking for ocean views should ask for the rooms on the northwest side of the big building. Many also have a small kitchenette for those looking to self-cater and some have a bathtub.

Small but cosy

Small but cosy.

The rooms in the newer building below the restaurant are a bit smaller than those located in the main building, but have large glass doors which let in the cool ocean breeze. They also include a little outdoor sitting area which isn’t available in any of the rooms in the main building.

Not a bad spot to read a book or grab a quick smoke

You can also enjoy the view and ocean breeze while chowing down on the large buffet breakfast included in the room rate. Khmer, English and French food is available along with a range of juices and coffee. If you don’t fancy eating at the guesthouse, there are a number of cheap eateries just across the street.

In the evenings, the small but relaxing bar is great for meeting fellow travellers while watching the sun set. If you are looking to settle in, discounts are offered for monthly stays; if this doesn’t quite tickle you but you’re looking for a place with similar rates, check out Backpacker Heaven just around the corner.
