Harbor Lights Palace Hotel

Elegant but relaxed

What we say: 3.5 stars

The Harbor Lights Palace Hotel sits half way down the slope from Victory Hill to Victory Beach, making it a good choice if you want to be close to Victory Hill’s bar scene at night but within walking distance of the beach by day. Though its appearance is unassuming — the exterior could do with a coat of paint – rooms have been well maintained and out the back lies an inviting swimming pool set amid beautiful flowers.

Rather nondescript from the front

Nondescript from the front, but not bad at all once inside.

The rooms are plush and well decorated with large, king-size beds, heavy curtains, and a desk area. All rooms come with a refrigerator, TV, hot water, included WiFi and in-room safe. Two large glass sliding doors lead out onto your private balcony. Lounging in one of the comfy, balcony chairs while having a drink and watching the sunset over the ocean will be a pleasing ending to a long day spent exploring the beaches of Sihanoukville.

Wouldn't mind watching the sunset from here every night

Rooms start at US$55 for a single on one of the lower floors; doubles are US$65. Your best bet is to spend a little extra and opt for the panoramic US$60. These are located on the upper two floors and give you an unimpeded view of the ocean and the Sihanoukville port area. Other than the view, the standards and panoramics offer the same furnishings and amenities. They also have suites with multiple rooms starting at US$75 and offer monthly rates as low as US$800.

Enough room for two

The downstairs restaurant offers a variety of dishes ranging from hamburgers (US$3) and croque madams (US$4) to grilled duck breasts (US$10) and pasta dishes (US$5.) While they do have one or two Khmer dishes on the menu, they focus on Western-style fare.

The main areas of the hotel are relatively quiet and you won’t run into a bunch of drunk or rowdy people, so it’s a good choice for families. The kids can spend the day playing by the pool or you can all walk down to the beach for some seaside fun. The Harbor Lights Palace has an elegant ambience but without an overly formal feel.

Warm and clean. You're gonna have to excuse us, but it's time for a swim now

You’re gonna have to excuse us, but it’s time for a swim now.

If you have your own transport, be warned that the Palace only has a small, dirt parking spot on the outside of the building. We definitely recommend locking a moto up at night as the street gets pretty dark and deserted. While the rooms are plush and clean plus the pool is an added benefit, but if you don’t need to be in this area, do know that you can find similarly decorated rooms and amenities over on Occheuteal beach in the US$30 to US$50 range.
