Best option for flash packers

What we say:
With its great location and superb amenities, The Bus Stop is one of the finest flashpacking options in Battambang. The first floor serves as a bar, restaurant and a common area where you can meet fellow travellers and local expats while sipping icy cold beer. All rooms are equipped with king-size beds, large cable TVs, hot water and fast internet. Holds poker nights and screens the latest TV shows. Room rates include breakfast. Bus Stop closed down in late 2010 but has reopened under new ownership in February 2011.

Great value, and an oasis when arriving from the border
We arrived via the Pailin border crossing from Thailand as first time visitors to Cambodia. After being surrounded by pushy moto and taxi drivers, and dealing with a driver who tried to sell us to another guesthouse, this place was an oasis. It is clean, safe and the layout is more like a bed and breakfast than a guesthouse - the people who run it actually live there, so you are staying in a room in their house with their family, rather than a hotel. The breakfast food was good, and so was the cheap beer. For dinner, in our quest not to eat western food on our trip, we wandered 5 min and found several good restaurants. The place is not fancy by any standards and the rooms are on the small side. Whether you want to stay here or not comes down to what you value - a safe place to crash versus luxury accommodation. However, keep in mind that the room rate is $20 USD. In Canada a campsite with no structures or running water can cost you that much per night, which is why I find some of the critical reviews regarding value incredible on this blog. Brett and his wife were both very helpful and informative in making arrangements and giving you the real scoop on Battambang, taxi drivers, Cambodia and anything that you might want to know. Having an Aussie sort us out on our first day in Cambodia was much needed. Brett suggested we visit the bamboo train, a temple and the killing caves on our one day in the area with his tuk tuk driver. We did, and it was fantastic. Battambang lacks the fake facade of Siem Reap- it is the real Cambodia.

Basic for the price
Intended to stay here for 2 nights but left after one as we found another hotel in Battambang (Seng Hout) which was both cheaper and of a higher standard. It's not that the rooms are bad, more that it's pretty basic for what you pay ($15 for a double fan room). The rooms are in desperate need of refurbishment, the bed was pretty old and the door didn't lock properly. Fast wifi though. Brett was helpful but I found him a little passive-aggressive. Also you have to walk through the kitchen in order to get to any of the rooms which was a little off-putting. More generally I do not agree with Travelfish that Battambang is one of the 'must-see' travel destinations in Cambodia. If you want a riverside town go to Kampot. Battambang boasts the tourist-driven bamboo train and not a lot else. For the distance from Siem Reap it's really not worth the effort, other than as a stopover for breaking the overland journey into Thailand.

English is Good!
Stayed here for just two nights, but found Brett very friendly and helpful. Was super glad he sent a tuk tuk to pick me up from the bus, as otherwise I might have been devoured in the feeding frenzy waiting just outside the bus doors! Rooms are basic but the beds are big and super comfy. Good wifi connection, all the cable channels, hot water showers. Plans are in the make for some re-painting and upgrades on the style for the rooms, so look forward to seeing what they've done next year!

Clean, warm, welcoming family guesthouse with great wi-fi, food, and tours
We stayed here for 2 nights. The rooms were simple and clean, though small and stuffed to the brim, but the a/c worked great, and wi-fi was super fast in the room and the bar. We met some great people traveling through. The rates are decent and include a nice breakfast, and the their menu is competitively priced with HUGE portions. All staff were warm and welcoming, and the owner Brett was a huge help in planning and logistics---from arranging a pick-up, to departure buses, getting us a great tour, and also for his great tips on the area, including some amazing restaurants we wouldn't have found otherwise. If i come back to Battambang and need cheap lodging, I'll stay here in a heartbeat.

You can never do enough research
We had booked the 2 balcony rooms for 3 nights after a lot of conversation with Brett the owner. However for $US20 with no b/fast we were very disappointed and we never actually stayed we found a new hotel that charged us $US30 a room with buffet b/fast. We found it to be unclean with thread bear linen and we couldnt even access the balcony. We have stayed in a lot of GH in Cambodia, Vietnam & Laos but never to this standard. Brett was not happy but he will have to improve his rooms, menu(all western) and clean himself up given new hotels are opening at much cheaper rates. However we did book his 1 day trip for $US20pp and that was excellent our driver was Ro he was a fountain of local knowledge. We were out from 9am till about 5pm I highly recomend you do the Bamboo Train it has an amazing history and is so much fun.

A little scary
Rooms were okay, but bathroom a bit dirty. Nice to have wifi, but I'd say the Gecko Cafe is way faster (and free with any purchase). The creepy part came on the second night when we were woken by loud banging and screaming. Thought it was coming from next door, but the next morning the hotel owner had a scratch on his face and his wife had a black eye. Chatted with some people in a different room and no one knew what to do. Awkward and sad to say the least. Wouldn't stay here again. Royal Hotel was a decent alternative.

Good spot
We stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed it. Rooms are good, comfortable and have DVD players and Brett has a massive DVD collection (including Spaceballs). Cheap beer and a good western menu. Pancakes were a favourite. Also rented a bike while we were there, and had no problems with it. Brett is super helpful has a wealth of knowledge about Battambang. Overall, a simple and good place to stay and I'd go back.

More expensive
A bit more expensive than stated here, 9$ for a fan room & 15$ for a/c, a little pricey for the standard, not great value, rooms were ok, clean but small had seen better days. Owners were nice & friendly, the bar was quiet but it was low season, the food on offer is limited but nice enough, again a little pricey for what you get. Overall if a little lower priced would be a good option. Bus stop pick up is handy & moto rental / tours available.

Was OK for a few nights
As your review says: friendly staff (though they did send through a sarcastic email when they mistakenly thought I was a no-show!) basic and no frills which is fine, but was surprised at how much wear and tear it was starting to show for a new place (I've never seen such a filthy ceiling fan before!) Got woken up at about 5:30 am by a banging sound -something that sounded like giant veggies being chopped - that wasn't much fun. They can arrange a good motorbike driver for a nice tour through the countryside.

Good stay here
Moved here after stopping in for a couple of beers and had a very nice time. A friendly place, they are helpful with everything. This is a good choice for the traveller, stayed in a nice clean room and will stay again next time passing through.
