Acquired by Orient-Express Hotels, Trains & Cruises back in 2006, the former Pansea is now La Residence d'Angkor. The breathtakingly high standards remain the same and a few new things have been added: a flashy poolside bistro and outdoor barbeque with fabulous imported meats, as well as a stilted bar area resembling a luxurious version of a traditional Khmer home. In 2008, it also added a new spa and fitness centre and during our 2009 visit they were completing construction on an additional eight rooms to its existing 54. This classy five-star hotel is the most centrally located of the ultra-luxury spots in Siem Reap, though it's unlikely you'll be leaving often. The sprawling rooms boast some of the biggest baths we've seen in a hotel (though when we visited, our showerhead didn't have enough water pressure to properly bathe). The rooms are all open plan with a contemporary Southeast Asian feel to them and have private decks with lounge chairs. The lovely pool, lined in emerald-tinted tiles and surrounded by dense foliage, might drag you outside. It's a fabulous hotel, but with their astronomical prices, anything less would have you begging for a refund. Rooms have choice of river or pool view -- we think river has the edge.
