Hotel de la Paix continues to maintain its snobbery. When we visited in 2009, the desk clerk grudgingly showed us around, although we met a kind and friendly waitress who discussed with us the variety of fauna living in the giant banyan tree in the hotel's central courtyard. An incongruous edifice that looks equal parts Egyptian and Art Deco, Hotel de la Paix does its best to impress. It's geared toward an urbane clientele for whom a hotel is just as important as the destination. There's nothing remotely Cambodian about La Paix with the exception of their Meric restaurant, which serves up obscure Cambodian dishes. The hotel's Web site claims that the architecture is influenced by Khmer design, but the "apsara" statues lining the halls are so stylized that they no longer resemble them, and are bathed in an eerie purple light. La Paix's vaguely Art Deco design is continued with clean lines and luxurious materials in every room: polished granite, marble and wood, with silver banyan fronds above the head boards. iPods are in every room, and feature lectures on Cambodian history along with their music selection. The serene swimming pool in La Paix's courtyard is best at night, when lit from within by blue lights. It's more like a maze, with winding waterways that end in submerged seating areas, lined with trees, with bridges over the top of it and an infinity edge that drops off at the courtyard below. Next to the pool is a large multi-level spa. Yoga and relaxation classes are offered. Though rooms are overpriced, the Art Lounge and Meric restaurant are highly recommended; it's a taste and a view of Cambodia that one is unlikely to find anywhere else. The lounge is swanky, with fantastic drinks, and rotating modern art exhibits. Online rates are up to half the price of walk-in.
