Description
Angkor Voyage Villa came highly recommended by a Travelfish regular and when we wandered through we found the rooms to be quite a good deal with comfortable furnishings and a spacious layout. All came fitted out with hot water bathrooms (with tub), cable TV and minibars and there's also a ground floor restaurant. Given the location, but a short walk from the Old Market area, we thought the rooms were a steal at these prices -- even if the staffer who showed us around needed a sense of humour transplant.

Unpleasant stay - ![]()

Rooms: Even on our first night, the room seemed dirty and uncleaned, and we felt uncomfortable. Our room's window (which had bars) looked onto a narrow pathway running along the side of the hotel, which was used by staff throughout the day and night. The room itself was below what we expected, even at the low rates. Also, despite two checks with the owner prior to arrival, we were given a different room than requested (twin beds rather than a double) and told the hotel was booked. The rooms look nothing like those pictured on their website.
Staff: The staff was a bit sketchy, and not very helpful. We basically got forced into using an employee's tuk-tuk the entire time we were there and paying much more than the going rate, as we were worried about upsetting them and having things stolen. They made it clear to us that using other transportation was unacceptable.
There was free internet, good, but the free breakfasts were dismal. Location is down a sketchy side street.
Laptop Stolen From my Room - ![]()

I stayed at the Angkor Voyager Villa in November 2007 for 3 days. For the first 2 nights, my room was not cleaned. On the third day, my room was cleaned. Since I had left my laptop in the room throughout my stay, including the last morning, I felt confident that the hotel was safe. Unfortunately, I assumed wrong. I left my room early evening to buy a bus ticket, and after 30 minutes, upon returning I found that my laptop had been stolen. I had my key with me and approached the staff regarding this. They basically said they didn't trust me and thought I was lying to them. Upon requesting that they contact the tourist police, they refused to call them. Instead, they had 4 of their ''goons'' / tough-guys come to the hotel and basically intimidate me. I gotta say that this is the worst display of behavior / customer service I experienced during my 3 month trip in SE Asia. To put the burden on me and make no effort whatsoever to help, makes me wonder whose to blame!? HMM

Shadow of Angkor (previously known as Rasmei Angkor) is one of the few budget places overlooking the Siem Reap river in Siem Reap's old market area. Particularly obliging staff were on duty at Red Piano when we called in. Rooms are spotless and quite well-sized affairs -- brightly painted (as is the hotel's exterior, though it's more purple than red nowadays). The Red Piano is a really good deal for small groups as the rooms price jumps by just... more
