You know when the smiling manager pulls himself out of a hammock and greets you with an immediate handshake that you're onto a good thing. This was a surprising find -- it looks like a typical Khmer house-style guesthouse from the street, with a big, baking parking lot and a forgettable design, but behind the main house there's a second building with very basic but clean guesthouse rooms, all with fan and private bathroom. A garden area has a few hammocks and a large restaurant and, amazingly, a self-cooking area -- how's that for a bargain? There's also a good little barbeque setup out back, and while there wasn't anyone staying there when we visited it was nevertheless easy to see that this could be a fun, relaxed place for budget travellers when the crowds roll in. None of the furniture is cushioned enough to spend much time relaxing on, but for the price the facilities are clean, nice and satisfactory. Friendly management, shows promise and bargain rates.

The Prince Mekong Villa reviews

Read 3 opinions from Travelfish readers

Friendly staff - 1st December, 2009
Stayed here for 3 nights in Oct-08. Ran in to the same rooster which sounded off every morning around 3am outside our window. Our room had a fan which just managed to cool things down. The owner was great and helped organize our bike tour around the temples on day 1. Give yourself more than an hour to get to the top of the first temple for sunrise. We're in good shape but by the time we got our tickets and missed a few turns, and suffered bike chain issues the sun had come up and we were between the trees! I strongly suggest if you're up for the ride to do it, as it was a great way to get around and see the sites. On day 2 we opted for a tuktuk and went a bit farther afield. The owner also organized our bus tickets and transportation to the bus terminal on our last day. The laundry was a waste of time as our clothes came back just as dirty and smelly but it was free so nothing lost. The other staff were very friendly and cheerful. Breakfast was included and very good. There's a keg and it's self serve $1/ beer.

Quiet and peaceful! - 22nd February, 2008
Stayed here for four nites in February 2008. Nice and quiet except for the odd rooster, dog, or inconsiderate guest slamming doors. Off the guest house road on a side street. Owner was nice. Extras like laundry, breakfast, and bikes a great addition. Owner booked bus tickets for us (at a reasonable price) and made sure we got on the bus. Would have stayed there the whole vacation if my wife would have agreed but she wanted to see other areas of Cambodia.
