Seven Candles Guesthouse

Hotel with heart

What we say: 3.5 stars

Seven Candles Guesthouse is an unassuming modern Khmer building with tuk tuks ready waiting out front, yet behind the basic façade is a guesthouse with a heart.

Seven Candles, not seven storeys.

Located on Wat Bo Road, the location may be nothing to write home about but it only takes a $1-2 tuk-tuk ride and 10 minutes of your time to reach the Old Market, so everything is still in easy reaching distance yet just outside the hustle and bustle of the Pub Street area. You can also take advantage of free bicycle hire to get about which is included in the room rate -- but if you feel like increasing the pace a bit, mountain bikes are available for $5 for when you’re ready to hit the temples.

Flying bicycles

Flying bicycles.

There are 28 rooms in the property, consisting of double, twin and quad rooms -- there are two of the latter. In total 16 of these have balconies, which is a very pleasant addition to the fairly priced rooms. Each floor has a small and cosy lounge area with bookshelves and chairs to chill out on overlooking Wat Bo Road, with a computer on each level. Free WiFi is offered throughout.

You may just want to catch up on that travel blog you ambitiously set up or send those overdue emails home by heading up to the top of the building to the rooftop lounge which doubles up as the restaurant in the evening. Though nobody was there at the time of visiting, it was a welcoming space to hang out in.

Time to relax.

There’s nothing to dazzle here with the decoration of the rooms, but for the price – US$20 a night for a double or twin, US$38 for a quad room – you get solid amenities: mini-fridge, towels provided, cable TV, coffee and tea making facilities and a helpful restaurant recommendation list. The clean rooms all have ensuite bathrooms, with hot and cold water, which were refurbished in 2013. You pay appropriately for what you get. Breakfast is not included but inexpensive.

Furthermore, the staff are a friendly and helpful bunch happy to assist. Khmer owner, Ponheary Ly is a tour guide who set up the Ponheary Ly Foundation to assist underprivileged children gain a better access to education. Guests at Seven Candles are invited to learn more about the organisation if interested.

Caroline swapped the drizzle of Old Blighty for the dazzling sunshine of Siem Reap and she spends most weekends cycling the temple-studded terrain that she can call her backyard.
