Frangipani Green Garden Hotel and Spa

Well located guesthouse

What we say: 3.5 stars

Frangipani Green Garden Hotel & Spa, part of the Cambodian-based Frangipani chain that owns Siem Reap sister Property Frangipani Villa Hotel I and II on Wat Bo Road, is a former guesthouse that was bought, renovated and re-opened as a hotel in July 2012.

Goodbye guesthouse, hello hotel.

Goodbye guesthouse, hello hotel.

However, think of this property as a hotel and it falls short of our expectations given what the rest of the properties in the group offer. A little more restoration would go a long way in bringing it up to par with these. Think of it instead as a good guesthouse – it has a pool, spa, spacious outdoor gardens and convenient location – and it makes our cut for properties worth considering.

Though it may have been re-modelled, it has yet been fully revitalised. The 16 rooms and suites are fully functional though clearly hankering after a fresh lick of paint. We double-checked the walk-in rate for their entry-level deluxe room at US$49 as it was more than we were expecting – it’s probably not quite worth that much. But fortunately, the same room type is offered for just $30 online, including breakfast and a free pick-up. The category up, deluxe pool view, is advertised at an appealing US$40. Good value prices, we like — so make sure you book via (see link below).

The hotel has an attractive swimming pool and a surprisingly spacious garden given it has a central, urban location just off Sivatha Road which makes it walk-able to Pub Street, the (original) night market and nearby restaurants. Location is a sure plus point here.

City swimming.

City swimming.

With three separate quirky buildings that feel homey, the architectural style creates character and a charm that emanates from the outside as opposed to the design and decor you’ll find inside. The original building is a Khmer-style one-storey house with private balconies for the suite rooms located here, which are more polished than the deluxes.

With an on-site spa and restaurant it has hotel elements to justify the name, though certain more basic features linger on such as quite simple furniture. The bathrooms display the most obvious hallmark of its former existence and came across as tired, as opposed to the slicker, more contemporary styles you’d get at Frangipani Villa I and II — though they do charge more as a result.

If the ‘green garden’ selling point draws you in, and you are happy to stay a touch further out of the city centre, River Garden guesthouse is a flourishing, leafy alternative.
