Karavansara Retreat and Residences
Stylish hotel and residence, take your pick
What we say:
A mere five-minute stroll over the river from the Old Market down quiet Street No.25, the midrange Karavansara Boutique and Karavansara Residence stand face to face in an excellent location.
A trendy renovated white-washed two-storey villa, Karvansara Boutique has an inconspicuous entrance. Reception is found tucked away at the back of its adjoining restaurant, where breakfast is taken, housed in traditional wooden villa. This incongruous and quirky mix of architecture continues over the road where the serviced apartments, comprising Karavansara Residence, find their home in a minimalist, urban concrete and brick block.
The boutique hotel has a touch more character than the Residence. Garden Courtyard Rooms are priced from USD$65/79 (including breakfast) with more spacious boudoirs in the guise of Colonial Heritage Rooms, from $69/89 (including breakfast) – it is worth paying the extra for the latter as these are much larger rooms. Ground floor Colonial Heritage rooms are endowed with a porch, upstairs with a balcony, overlooking the city street. Climb the staircase and you will find a rooftop pool designed for dipping rather than swimming, but nonetheless still a relaxing place to cool off in this chilled out property.
Inside the rooms bathrooms are slick with separate toilet and shower room. Decor is minimal but works. Perhaps a bit too minimal, however, is that there’s no minibar or kettle in the room which we find surprising for the price as these amenities wouldn’t be unexpected at cheaper accommodation options, pushing Karavansara to the upper end of the price scale in its category for a small, contemporary boutique.
Over the road Karavansara Residence is notably sparse of staff. The serviced apartments come with one, two or three bedrooms, which can be taken on longer term let or treated as a hotel for more fleeting stays. Though the regular service of a hotel is lacking, instead you get a home away from home. The lounges are spacious, private balconies with views over the river are charming and the amenities put its sister property over the road to shame: there’s a full kitchen with fridge, microwave and all the mod-cons.
Karavansara Residence similarly has a rooftop pool with an large balcony with deck chairs ready to soak up the rays. As an apartment block you’ll need to bring up your own drinks here – but we recommend you do. This is one of the best accommodation views in Siem Reap we’ve found looking down over the river.
There is a slight downside, however: Karavansara Residence isn’t cheap for the finish of the design with one-bed apartments from USD$178 up to USD$348 for a three-bed. However, families may find an apartment with multiple bedrooms works better than forking out for a spacious suite at other midrange properties, which tend to come with premium price tags.
