Apsara Centrepole

Great central midrange spot

What we say: 4 stars

With almost more hotels to choose from in Siem Reap than there are temples to visit, let us cut to the chase and help you out: Apsara Centrepole is a great midrange option in Siem Reap that ticks all the right boxes with an excellent location that’s hard to beat.

Busy outside, quiet inside.

Busy outside, quiet inside.

Positioned in the very centre of the downtown area it’s not even a stone’s throw to the hub of activity. It’s only a one-minute walk to Pub Street, if that, and sits exactly opposite one of our favourite restaurants in town, Haven. You don’t have to stretch your legs for longer than about five minutes to get to the night markets. Or the Old Market. Or to find a spa, an ice cream, a bar, a pharmacy, an ATM or whatever it is you think you might need nearby. We think you get the picture. The few metres distance it does have from the epicentre, marked by Pub Street, are just enough for the hotel to still be a quiet place to retreat to if the nightlife doesn’t tempt you.

With 19 rooms spread over three floors across four room categories — apsara studio, balcony deluxe, balcony super deluxe and terrace suite — the hotel’s size retains a welcoming feel and there’s enough public space for its proportions. There’s a semi-outdoor breakfast and restaurant area, though we’d encourage you to venture further afield given the vast range of international cuisine available in Siem Reap.

Basic but good.

Lounge areas are on the second and third floors and the bright blue swimming pool provides relief from the heat, with a couple of day beds alongside the sun loungers. When the hotel’s full, there won’t be enough for all guests, but this is no different to other midrange properties like the more stylishly designed and decorated Frangipani Villa on Wat Bo.

Chairs ready waiting for you.

Indoors the decor is simple but attractive and sufficiently modern for Western tastes. The rooms are comfortable and well fitted-out with contemporary bathrooms with rain showers.

Door-less bathroom area, but smart.

Though there is nothing that is stand-out innovative or inspirational in the style stakes or what Apsara Centrepole offers in amenities, there’s not much we can think of to complain about here. Even the price is reasonable, particularly in low season (April to September) when they start at US$40 a night with various offers on their website and to be found online.

Caroline swapped the drizzle of Old Blighty for the dazzling sunshine of Siem Reap and she spends most weekends cycling the temple-studded terrain that she can call her backyard.
