Spacious poolside comfort
Although not on the sea, Le48 Zen and Happy Resort has a central location and is an excellent midrange option for families who’d like a bit more space than some of the smaller hotels in Candi Dasa. The oddly named resort’s modern style has a strange starkness about it.
Its colourful blocks of green lawn, bright blue pool and white bungalows remind us of a David Hockney painting from the 60’s come to life. What it does have going for it is a large expanse of space, huge square swimming pool and big clean modern bungalows. Not beachfront, Le 48 Zen and Happy Resort is sandwiched between the lagoon and the main road, with access to the sea alongside the lagoon.
The good-sized cement air-con bungalows surround the pool. Contemporary styling is predominantly white and pale grey, with tiled floor and an interesting ceiling treatment with a white painted bamboo lattice effect. Minimalist clean lines are softened with a padded neutral-coloured bedhead containing a bank of switches to control lighting. A springy bed with white sheets displays cushions matching the bedhead. White painted wardrobe, luggage rack and desk, wicker chairs, TV for DVD use only (no channels), minibar, and a built-in daybed — which could be used as an extra bed — complete the furnishings. The smart and modern black and white bathroom has rain showers at either end, one outdoor — so two people can shower in a hurry? Large tinted-glass sliding doors open directly to the grassy pool area with no veranda. A small corner porch at the side of the bungalow has comfortable chairs and a table facing the pool.
The massive, inviting swimming pool incorporates five raised open cube-like structures with sunshades and white beanbag lounges for some poolside comfort. The surrounding sprawling lawn is great for kids to run wild, but keep an eye on them, as the pool is not fenced. Breakfast is included and WiFi is free. An extra bonus is the attached French restaurant with views to the lagoon — it has a great fusion menu and extensive wine list.
