Guru Ratna Homestay

Some colonial rooms

What we say: 3 stars

Set back from the road, Guru Ratna Homestay has a couple of colonial houses that have been renovated to make them slightly more modern than Meme Surung next door. The problem with the renovation though is that it adds a bit of mainstream Indonesian styling into the mix and it doesn't really work — especially the floor tiles. This small annoyance aside, the rooms still have a heap of charm and the four poster beds are old metal things that look like they just came out of the 1920s -- they're still comfortable. Bathrooms are clean and have hot water. As with Meme Surung next door, the only rooms with a view are the cheaper ones, in this case with shared bathrooms, but they're still reasonable, if a bit overpriced when compared to the more budget orientated options. This is a good place to stay if you can get into one of the colonial rooms, but otherwise stay elsewhere. In low season be sure to bargain -- we were offered 50% off the walk-in rates off the bat.
