Nusa Penida Guesthouse
Best in Sampalan

What we say:
Down a laneway to the water at the western outskirts of Sampalan, Nusa Penida Guesthouse has a clean Balinese style building in a compact garden compound. The rooms are of a good size with private bathrooms and there is a sala in the garden to relax in. There's also a warung across the laneway and, rather oddly, a message centre between the guesthouse and the water, so if Nusa Penida ever does take off, we could see this developing into a little traveller's quarter. You're around a ten minute walk from the Sampalan market (which itself is well worth a look).

Nice family run guesthouse
This place was suggested to me by Roddie, the local tour guy - and was known as Made Homestay at the time of my visit. It was owned by his 'uncle' (although that relationship may have been in the broader '6 degrees of separation' sense. And more likely only 2-3 degrees on Penida!). The rooms are Bali-style rooms and are good-sized and reasonably clean. The bathrooms were basic (sit-on toilet, but flushed with buckets of water from the mandi). Cold water only and fan. The only minor complaint was the lack of screen mesh in the small open-air windows above the glass windows, and I imagined being eaten alive by mozzies. Not having a mozzie net with me, I turned the fan on me on high speed all night, and I was fine. Cost 100,000rp/night – including a very sweet cup of coffee in the morning. There was a good little night-time food market just up the road where you could get some cheap eats. I was the only one staying at the time, so it was pretty quiet. The family were friendly enough, but pretty much kept to themselves, and left me alone. Their naughty little puppy chewed up my favourite jandal (flip flop) overnight because I was silly enough to leave it outside the door - but I didn't have the heart to tell the family. I'm sure he's grown into a lovely family pet by now. The homestay is up a narrow side-road/alley, opposite the school on the main road through Sampalan. Ask around everyone seems to know it! I would recommend it as a good clean, basic place to stay. Then again, there aren't many options...
