Wena Homestay
Hot water and free WiFi

What we say:
The value to be found at Wena Homestay is absolutely astonishing and anyone on a budget would do well by settling in here. Rooms are big, bright and airy, but very basic and feature bamboo beds and hot water bathrooms. They're well-cleaned and are situated within a quaint family compound, which is home to a few family pets as well. If this wasn't enough of a good deal, the homestay also includes free use of WiFi although there are reports that the family must reset it every now and then due to reliability issues. With hot water and free WiFi, this place is a steal despite being at the basic end of the accommodation scale in Ubud.

Go for the upstairs room!
We took an upstairs room for 200k (we were initially quoted 250k) and it was fabulous. We had a bedroom and a living room of sorts, tucked away at the back of the compound with a view of the garden and a feeling of total security. The only complaint was that the bedroom was a bit small and dark, but otherwise it was a lovely place to stay. They were full most of the time we were there, so it might pay to book ahead.

Intoxicatingly Charming
I would give Wena Homestay the Award for Best Family-Owned Guesthouse and the Award for Best Quaint Courtyard. Owned by the same gentleman who runs the Monkey Sanctuary, the homestay is small, well maintained, and in a relatively central location on a quiet street that has plenty of action if you stick around long enough. We extended our stay for two extra nights because we were so smitten with the place. Most rooms are tucked around a beautiful fountain courtyard, each with their own patio. The rooms were simple, if a bit dark inside but clean. Bring your own towels. Breakfast is served on the front porch, luckily not the same thing everyday! Motorbikes are available for rent, just ask the owner or one of his sons. Laundry is quick and cheap. I would decidedly stay here again in a heartbeat.
